Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

PS - I'm a bit short of reviews on Amazon for SWD2

If you did enjoy SWD2, a few more reviews will help drown out my Troll.

Perhaps there is no troll. Perhaps someone anticipated your reaction and chose anonymity rather than risk you acting up.
I've looked at all 3 negative reviews-not particularly troll-ish I reckon.
I'd suggest that not everyone likes your books, maybe they stayed quiet. Always a worry when you can't take criticism.

Perhaps you should get your partner to write more reviews on Amazon?

@skiingwithdemons, I don't see any trolling on the Amozon reviews.

Across both books there are 60 reviews - 52 for book 1 and 8 (all *****) for book 2.

Overall 54 *****, 3 ****, 3 *. So most people who reviewed thought it was great, very few thought it was only pretty good and very few thought it was dire. Most customer satisfaction surveys I've been involved with would mark that down as a stonking approval rating.

@bethc, Glad you enjoyed. Yep - back in Morzine, but there is a stash of signed copies of both books in UK.
If you order from my websites skiingwithdemons.com - my "people" will send you one ( "people" = Debbie).

@endoman, thanks for the review.

@michaelbury17,

Landie did make it here in good shape.

I was forced to refuel near Dijon and stupidly filled the tank with regular diesel. Got to Zine late, went to bed not realising it was going to be -14c that night and the diesel waxed.

I dug out my spare fuel filter to find it missing the draining plug (lost in action last season).

The nice man from the AA came and asked in his pigeon English with more than a little bemusement on his face,

"You've driven zis from zee UK?!"

The good news this morning is the garage has just called and said she has thawed out and is running well so I can collect her tomorrow.

When people say Defenders are unreliable, despite the overwhelming evidence, I say they are not.

Landie didn't let me down, I let her down by giving her the wrong fuel.

She got me to Zine for the 7th time and probably deserved a few days'
layup in a nice warm garage.

Maybe an anecdote for SWD3 - a book I'm never going to officially write.

@bethc, posted today - thanks for ordering from me directly. I have a large french garage bill to pay.

We've got snow here too, despite what the Snow Schadenfreudes, known as the UK press, say.

I read the 2nd book over Christmas, although I left it at my place in the Vallee de la Manche having not read the last 4 pages, despite that being a very relevant chapter.
Hope you have a good season.

@doddsie, Small World, sat in Framboise (Vallee de la Manche) trying to get over man-flu.

I'm going to give cross-country skiing a go this season and what better place than the VDLM - straight out of my door.

I hope the last 4 pages are worth waiting for - I feel I ran out of time a bit trying to meet my Xmas deadline.

I do a bit of cross-country as well, as the tracks come past my place. If you see someone really rubbish and obviously English then say hello, it's likely to be me as I only ever see French people doing it.

@doddsie, Will do.
It's actually Debs who want to try it - she thinks it will be less scary than Alpine skiing.
Do we just hire some kit and go for it - or hire a guide/instructor?
I suspect we are both more likely to fall over on the descents. Nice to get away from the English crowds though.

Yes I fall over a lot. I just bought the kit on Ekosport and gave it a go, although I think a lesson would be better. ESF seem to do a group lesson every Wednesday afternoon (I think) as I see them meeting up at the restaurant Chez Layan-ne. I've never tried going up the 'red' marked route from Erigne, as I know from running it in the summer how steep it is. I just stick to heading down from Erigne next to the river and back.

Hi SnowHeads. Anyone fancy skiing with or without demons in March?

I currently have rooms free at Chalet Framboise ( 5-10th March & 19-24 March)
I'm also offering 25% discount to anyone who turns up with a signed copy of one of my books - signed by me that is Happy

I'm also leading a Ski Club trip to Laax w/c 25th , if you fancy a more upmarket experience (single rooms).

Ha ha, I didn't realise the author was on here! (I should have assumed...!)

I read the first book a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it; I'm about a quarter of the way through number two now. I'll pop up Amazon reviews when I've done both. I did a couple of ski seasons a few years back in my mid-30s so there's plenty of the tales that resonate.

Great work Chris.

Thanks @Dav, 30 is a better age than 50 to "do" a season. But the experiences are no doubt similar.
Going to take a summer off writing and possibly a season off ski-bumery - I need to address existential issues.

I hope SWD2 lives up to your expectations, and Amazon review would be much appreciated.

Being asked for an interview by Elaine Deed, Style Altitude’s editor in chief and former fashion editor at Tatlor, was flattering. Being called a “geezonaire” – not so much.

Not really being known for my dress or indeed skiing style, she was more interested in my books and the Alpine life of another 50 year-old ski bum or geezonaire as she calls us.

Anyway – does this mean I’m finally famous ?

@cad99uk, I'm now going to use the term "geezonaire" a lot - I think many SnowHeads fit the definition too.

Hi Chris

A bit behind the times, just ordered No.1 (order for Jang). Any chance of getting it in the post so it gets here before Friday 7th April as heading off on our Easter ski trip that day and need something to read.

@ster, Thanks for ordering my first book Jang. Stocks of SWD1 have runout in the UK.
I'm hoping to get some more from the printers this week, so hopefully in the post early next week for delivery by the 7th.

I don't known where you're going skiing , but if it's the Western Alps you might be in need of some good reading material Happy (no snow).

Due to lateness of Easter looked to go high or north when booking, chose north so off to Norway. Fingers crossed it doesn't get too warm there.

@Layne, I'm definitely still alive - I've checked in the mirror.
I'm not the Olympic Athlete "Chris Tomlinson" either, although we have the same birthday!

@boredsurfin, Thanks for the link to the Defender porn. But I stand by this quote from SWD2:

"There are those who pimp their Land Rovers and spend hours polishing and admiring them on their drive, but they have missed the raison-d'être of a Land Rover. A Defender should be off-road somewhere, wheel arch deep mud.

It’s always a mistake to hoover inside a Defender, because you’ll lose too many important, yet to be identified as missing, nuts and bolts. Ultimately, if you take a Defender down the pimping road, you’ll just end up driving a really crap car."

5 stars for SWD II.

Never mind the cat and Land Rover diversions (both of which have been a part of my family folklore in different ways).

Boy can CT write about drinking, and particularly that miserable stage in the process where the drinking is done and the brain slowly un-marinades.

It's as if Robert Ruark(1) and A.E. Houseman(2) were stuck waiting for a flight out of Munich, at the American end of the terminal after the second set of security scanners, each with a hangover.

Bravo.

@Layne, That's far too many Chris Tomlinsons in one life. Being childless, my branch of the Tomlinson tree ends with me.
@boredsurfin, Mould grows well in the back of mine. I like to think of it as air freshener.

@Invictuszell, Flattered by the literary comparison (Houseman especially).

"Ale, man, ale's the stuff to drink, for fellows whom it hurts to think" (As you can see, I found and read Terence)

I notice you're in the USofA. If you've got time, I'd really appreciate a review on amazon.COM for SWD2 - you'd be the 1st on the American Amazon (Just cutting and pasting your post above, would work).

Anyway, enough of this highbrow literary chat, Its summer and I've got housework to do. Debbie has left me a list. Sad
