Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Pretty certain they'll all charge you exactly the same, and it won't be cheap.

@Valkyrie, don't be so certain about that, the St Anton shops got done by the Tirol authorities last year for operating a cartel and were seriously fined as well as warned about continuing the practice. The regulators are going to be checking the area quite carefully this year I expect. However, a lot of people who go to Lech don't have to worry about these little things, so I doubt it will be bargain basement prices! wink

@Samerberg Sue, interesting. Does anyone know if authorities have taken action in any other resorts?

Sportalp, in the basement of the Hotel Monzabon, next to the Schlegelkopf-chairlift.
Free storage of boots and ski's, should your hotel not be close to the pistes.
We have been going here for the last 7 years. Very good and friendly.
Lech is not cheap, but you get what you're paying for.
And Lech is not in Tirol. Toofy Grin (but still I think they also got the message; will see this winter!)

@Langerzug, whoops forgot that, but I think the other provincial governments will be watching as well and take action if necessary. I think every province is in need of extra income these days Toofy Grin

My mate booked us a holiday in Lech a few years ago and I ended up buying a set of second hand skis and paying ski carriage because hiring was so expensive. I can't remember how much it saved but it must have been worth it for me to go to the hassle.

I can't imagine rentalprices in Lech are that much different than eg St.Anton, Ischgl or Hochgurgl

I set up a topic about hire prices in Arlberg. This was based on our trip to St Christoph where there are two hire shops that I know and they both charge €164.40 for skis, boots and poles for my 16 year old daughter. Because of this I have now purchased a set of second hand skis which I hope will suit her for a couple of years. By the way they are cheaper in Pettenau further down the valley.

I once paid 256€ for 6 days hire of Head Chip skis at Stolz (sp) (an all-time high).

Next year was 199€ at the Pefferkorn place. (runner up)

The cartel does need sorting out, so it's good news if that's spreading west

Prices in Lech already differ, also in former years. Looks like in St.Anton they just have been a bit silly. (The Lechers have always been slightly ahead of St.Anton)
Villages like this have many ways of making underhand deals. It's an illusion to think we can do anything about it.
And, although off-topic: we can make our selves feel on top of things by tackling these kind of small cartels (not only in Austria, but also at home), but what about a global beer-market which for 70% is in one hand? Etc etc etc......

@Langerzug, Fortunately Anheuser Busch do not yet have their hands on Timothy Taylor's brewery.

Lech hire prices are one of the main reasons team hammondr all now have our own gear.

@red 27, Any difference in service quality between Strolz and Pefferkorn? Looking online the Pefferkorn place seems to have the best prices, especially if we reserve in advance. We are coming from the US and have brought our own skis in the past. But we're intending to do a bit of pre-ski traveling around Europe and I just think bringing skis is not practicable. We've looked at shipping skis but that's about as expensive as renting. More if we ship both ways. Nothing we do is going to be inexpensive. Thanks all for your help.

@RISkier, no idea, but I can recommend the Rud Alpe on the 34 run into town for a spanking good lunch. You're welcome.

What's wrong with Sportalp?
Actuallly: they are all good. Just look at the prices, and the ski's available (if that's possible online....) but anyway they will all let you change ski's if you don't like the ones you're skiing on. Every day should you prefer so.
But Sportalp is the one closest to the central chairlift! And Strolz is simpley the most expensive as they are, well, Strolz!

@Langerzug, Nothing wrong with Sportalp. If booked online the prices at the place at Pefferkorn are considerably better.

@Dr John, We'll need to give the Rud Alpe a try.
