Poster: A snowHead
|
Heading out the 17th jan for 12 days to Bad Gastein. Anyone here based there or nearby fancy giving me a few local tips, hidden valleys etc. Also for the evenings to eat and drink. (if you are in resort i will even buy you a beer or two for any useful advice.
Another thing, is it worth bringing my splitboard gear or is bootpacking usually sufficient ( its only 12 days and in january so hoping there will be plenty of snow around!)
Thanks in advance
M

Hi Freeridechef. I have an apartment in Bad Gastein and will be out there for the weekend Fri 22 to Mon 25 when you are in town. Problem is I am going out on a boys trip of mixed abilities (including a nervous beginner) so we won't be going anywhere near the sort of stuff you will want play in. If I could sneak off myself I would but I will be showing these guys around the mountain and generally responsible for their safety. You are more than welcome to join us for beers in the evening though as at the moment there are 7 of us with a couple more to confirm.
PM me if you want to know anything else.

@jagertree. Is it worth taking splitboard gear or just bootpack? I can always rent gear if it looks awesome but prefer my own and not looking to snowy at the mo!

Chef,
I did a season there back in '05. You have to do the NordAbfahrt (off top of Sportgastein). Also lots of good off-piste over back of Stubnerkogel and into Angertal through the scrub. Just don't get caught.
Unless it's changed, Apres at Silver Bullet and/or any of the bars run by the Scandies (e.g. Haeggblom's?). Hotel Krone's bar with Augustiner beer from Munich worth a visit. If you want to kick on, it's Gatz

Is Bad Gastein particularly popular with Scandinavians? Whenever I look at Swedish package holiday operators, it always pops up first and cheapest.

Bad Gastein is massively popular with the Scandinavians. A Swedish family own four or five of the big hotels in the town and actively promote it back in Sweden, Denmark and Norway so they are always busy. The resort itself is off the radar for most Brits which can be a good thing but then it is full of Swedish girls...........!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Don't believe its officially off-limits, there seems to be a general frown upon tree skiing in Austria though.
