@johnE, yeah I'm thinking it surely must be super the vast majority of the time.
Would have to be really bad in which case everywhere else would be suffering as well!

Tuesday 31 Jan. A very wet day with poor vis and temps up and down.
It was raining in the valley this morning and by 10am all the way up to around 2000m. Not what was needed, but higher up towards Aiguille Rouge they say it was still snowing.
No photos from me today as with all the rain I had an easy day and a nice long lunch.
Tomorrow they are forecasting a break in the poor weather for a day or two so we hope to get high on the mountain and enjoy the fresh snow.
If anyone has some photos of today please add them.
More to follow tomorrow evening!

Hi all,
I'm heading off to Les Arcs for the first time on Saturday - have been following this thread to get some insights into the conditions and it sounds like with new snow coming towards the end of the weeks we should be in for a good week!
I wondered if anyone has a recommendation for a nice restaurant in Peisey or Vallandry on our chalet host's night off (we're staying in Plan Peisey)? There's 10 of us and we're after the Savoyarde classics - i.e. stacks of melted cheese and meat...
Cheers

@jenheffa, La Trapoun is nice and the Bistro Savoyard is very nice. Both in the shopping area of Vallandry near the bottom of the Vallandry lift. Make sure you book by Monday afternoon!

Wednesday 1st Feb 2017. POWDER DAY!!
As those that read my posts might guess. Today as it was a powder day we headed to the Bellecote and did a lap of the bowl in wonderful untracked powder top to bottom and then over onto the Petit North Face and untracked powder again most of the way down to the forest track out.
It was necessary to walk about 100m at one point, but we did ski all the way to the bar at the bottom.
What a fun day!
The pistes on the way there and back were also freshened by last nights snow so those on the pistes today should also have had a fun time.
The Vanoise Express was very busy in the morning, but other lifts were OK and it was a great blue sky powder day.
Photos to follow shortly in the new Feb 2017 Album.
After some consideration. I think tomorrow we will head back over that way again and hunt out more untacked powder.
Anyone interested in joining us please email me or text me for details. You must have Arvi gear to come with us off piste.

@rob@rar, OK put me out of my misery, what piste are you on and is that an almost derted Bois de l'Ours lift in the background?

@johnE, Clocheret.

@rob@rar, I do wish you'd stop showing people the best snow, best run and best access to untracked 'between the pistes' powder (above/into the snowpark) in the domain...
Thankfully it is accessed by 'certainly NOT the best lift', so maybe all is not lost!

@rob@rar, I wish I had stuck to my first guess! after going up cachette first thing in the morning we often go up clocheret as the firts real run of the day. If the snow is half way decent then it is almost always deserted and with good clear view ahead you can really have a blast.

@johnE, sshh, don't tell anyone
There are some options on and off the piste from the top of that chair. One of my favourite routes if there's fresh snow is from the top of Clocheret, take a big traverse to the face above the top of the Cachette chair, drop down that, scoot across the piste to join Rouelles to drop down to 1600. And repeat. Bliss.

@rob@rar, crop that picture to roughly the middle third, and it's fantastic. You could get that put up as a backdrop in a ski rental shop.

Yes, I think that as it is a very slow chair in a corner of the resort keeps a lot of people away. I agree with you about that route down to 1600 - bliss. Or if you want to keep it on gentle pistes then follow the red piste down to the top of the cachette lift then down Arolle and onwards to La Grange. The combination of Clocheret and Cachette has the feeling of a downhill race course to me. Clocheret - Muguet is rarely busy and a great way to cross from Arc 1600 to 2000.
May they never "upgrade" that lift.
Please do not drop the size of the pictures. I like them

UPDATED Thursday 2 Feb. More powder, but also more tracks. However we still managed to find some room to put our own lines down.
Headed back to La Plagne and the Bellecote. Managed another route down through the Roche de Mio cliffs and then a lap of the bowl.
They closed the lifts high up so we were stuck with going back on the Gondola.
An easy ski down too Bauches Chair. Then back up to the ridge and home after a late picnic and a drink at the Altiport.
The soft snow has made the Off piste OK, but still plenty of rocks about. The pistes are holding up, but I hope the promised snow arrives as many pistes are becoming polished and hard in the busy places.
Photos from today are now posted in the Feb 2017 album on the Les Arcs Winter page.

Tomorrow in Les Arcs. Meeting at the top of Carreley Chair 10am for anyone interested.
PM me on here or text me or let someone know you are coming. Not sure what we will be doing it depends on the weather.

@rob@rar, is that the new GoPro Session 5 or the earlier generation? Interested, as the early generation is available at some tempting prices just now and my Hero2 (which now seems surprisingly low quality in bright sunshine conditions compared to the newer models)
Clocheret, that tends to be the "last lift of the day" when I stay in Bourg... When coming back from elsewhere in the domain, if you're cutting it fine and the lift is shut you can still head down, but if it's open... then you can catch it it's one nice long last blast all the way down to Cachette or if the legs are tired a more leisurely run down Arolles and then the blue Mont Blanc.

@Richie_S, it's the Session 5.
@Layne, they aren't photos, it's an individual frame of a 4K video, exported as a jpeg and tweaked in Photoshop.
@Tubaski thanks.

Snowed a bit early this morning (maybe 10cm at 1800m?) but now the weather has cleared and we even have a bit of blue sky. Snowline probably 1200m or so, looking down the valley. More snow expected later today.

Friday 3 Feb. And it's another powder day!!
Woke up this morning to snow in the trees at around 1400m and plenty more up top. Stayed in Les Arcs and met up with the others at the top of the Carreley Chair.
A nice line down to the Transarc then over to the Arc 2000 bowl.
As the bowl was busy thought we would find some untracked powder over on the Col de la Chal down to Nancoix. It did not disappoint.
As soon as we were on the way it was untracked and knee deep snow most of the way to the path out. Even the path was easy to ski without many rocks.
Made the bus with plenty of time so headed back up top of the Grand col.
The fresh snow had made all the pistes pleasant to ski and although busy higher up conditions were refreshed nicely by last nights snow.
This time from the top of the Grand col it was time to head far left then down towards Nancoix again. More fresh tracks and almost nobody around. Reached the path and had a picnic before heading down again. Not as much fun this time, but still OK ish! More rocks to avoid and few warn patches on the way down this time. Rather a shame after this morning. Needs more snow on the track again already!
Finally it was time to head back towards Les Arcs. Another good day in the powder. The pistes everywhere were much better today although quite busy. The off piste has improved a great deal although there are plenty of rocks around that you need to avoid.
Tomorrow we will meet at the top of the Carreley Chair at 10am. Anyone interested in joining us send me a PM and you MUST have Arvi gear!
Photos from today following shortly in the Feb 2017 Album on the Les Arcs Winter page. Enjoy!
@thefatcontroller, Hell is other peoples heaven! Powder in the trees we hope!! Cannot wait! At last the winter seems to be here again!

Dumping down right now! Many lifts delayed or closed. Anyone wanting to meet up today. New plan. Bottom of Vagere 10.30am. Message me if you are coming. Should be an epic powder day!
If you are driving up this weekend you will need chains and allow plenty of time. Roads busy!
Anyone wanting to rent powder skis. Check out Polaire Star ski shop at bottom of Funicular. They have some great gear this year!
Hope to see some of you during the holiday that are soon upon us again!

Just a quick question, I know there are caveats based on weather, traffic, no. of guests in resorts, etc., but does anyone have an estimate of transfer from BSM to 1950 with Crystal? We're on the ES day train, so it will be about 7pm-ish I think.
