Really great fun in lots of powder today - loved it!! We stayed on piste, but those boarding or skiing off piste were waist deep in powder at times!

I'm just about to push the buttons for a January ski trip.
I fancy next door in Zell am Zee ... I've never been there before
but I think I can take the bus around to Saalbach which I haven't visited for 20 years
Is it true and is Zell a worthwhile destination in its own right?
(I'm not interested in going over to Kaprun Glacier in January)

If you are a reasonable skier, I,e comfy on reds, then Zell is excellent, it has a real good variety, mountain top, tree runs, couple of great blacks (piste 13 & 14) - top down to the valley runs and decent huts for food and coffees. One side, sonnenalm, is pretty much exclusively reds, hence my opening comments.
You can ski for the top of Zell down a new piste which was the old X4 ski route down to a new gondola, or go straight past the gondola down to the road and be a short free bus ride to the saalbach ski circus at vorderglemm . At he end of the day you can then get a ski bus back to Zell.
Me and the kids went to Zell last year and and heading there again this year and plan to do this. You can get a Salzburg ski pass that covers both Zell / kaprun and Saalbach plus 20 odd other resorts for only €20 a week more than normal pass.

@DrLawn, Yes there's a regular bus service between Zell and Saalbach - timetable on the Saalbach website. Next season it is anticipated that you will be able to ski between them with a short ride on the ski bus in between.
As you're presumably aware Zell has a much smaller and lower ski area, but is nonetheless a pretty and popular resort - much depends on what you're looking for.

Not a lot lower really; from memory 100m top height difference (2100/2000) - resort is 250m lower (1000/750) but most of Zell's skiing is half way up mountain plus so i'd say average piste height is much the same
I like both resorts - main issue is that Zell is a fair bit smaller - depends if you don't mind repeating runs; the reds over on the Sonnkogel are really good and quite quiet, but as the name suggests face the sun so later in the season can get soft - but the majority of S-H faces south too...
Be great in 2 years (I think?) when they are fully connected with no need for a bus (needs a new lift in to S-H area as well doesn't it Tatman which will make your favourite hidden run a lot lot busier...)

@buchanan101, It's about a 1000 feet (sorry to sound old-fashioned) difference - often seen it raining in Zell when it's snowing in Saalbach - but no danger of that today - it was so cold that I was skiing along with my hands in front of my face!
Yes, it'll be interesting to see how things develop over the next couple of years - piste 68 may well gain a reservoir and snow cannons and become the main thoroughfare to Zell.

Top of Schmittenhohe is bang on 2000m I thought and S-H 2100m or a metre or two less... 330ft
But I guess you are talking bottoms?! The extra 200m to 300m over Zell and Kitzbuhel etc does help. Done all 3 in last 4 years and bottom of S-H was the best. Prefer height though away from the soft stuff...!

@Whitty, That was yesterday. Right now the temperature in the valley is minus 15°C and on the mountain it is minus 22°C - far too cold for rain, snow (or even skiing).

Apres-ski news: Spacey has arrived and is playing in Bobby's every Monday evening, Otzi Bar every Sunday and Wednesday evenings, and Spitzbub on Tuesdays and Thursdays (early evening). He assures us that we will be hearing more this season of his electric guitar (when he transforms himself into a cross between David Gilmour and Ritchie Blackmore).
As if that were not enough, the talented Irish band, Cuckoo, will perform in Bobby's Pub this coming Wednesday and every alternate Wednesday from then on.
On Friday Bobby's will be presenting a local all-girl band called "Real Beat"; however I think we saw them last season, and all I will say is, don't expect the Bangles.

Yes the bottom of the run back down to city express and the areitbahn, both get mushy at the bottom, which will be both altitude and the fact they are in the sun a lot. Last year we used to head down run 13 as it's shaded and much less busy, and the the blue "ski road" back into town which cut out all but the last 20m of the mushy piste. Alternatively you can always gondola it back down the city express.

Snow, for sure! Saalbach has been having some cold temperatures lately. -17 degrees last night. -20 in the valley this morning, although I heard temperatures higher up were considerably warmer. -11 or so. Couldn't verify personally, as I returned home today after a week of skiing.
The year started with pretty awful conditions. Yes, most runs were covered by artificial snow, but pistes consisted mainly of ice covered by thin dusting of snow. That all changed starting Wednesday, when fresh snow started falling all through Thursday night. Good conditions followed on Friday. I'm sure it's going to be good at least as long as temperatures are cold.

Arrived yesterday to freezing temps and loads of snow. Got some night skiing in Hinterglemm and some après at the schwarzacherhof. Snow was lovely and squeaky. Been chucking it down all night, so under foot conditions should be pretty darned good.

I popped in on this thread because I'm off to Zell in a couple of weeks.
So pleased for all of us that conditions are looking up.
Mr Tatman ... is there still a place called the Jauser Station in the valley south of Vorderglemm?
It used to rent out sledges for toboggan nights after a belly full of Schwein Haxen and too much Schnapps.
I cant quite work it out on Google, we had the pleasure of staying there for a week back in the 80's.

Skied both and for me Saalbach Hinterglemm is a better option, much bigger with north and south facing slopes giving more snow variability. Descents are longer and terrain is better at Saalbach and the lift system at Saalbach is more modern and no drag lifts I think! Enjoyed Zell too but given the choice would go Saalbach every time, don't rate Kaprun part at all, was very open and treeless, like being back at Cairngorm. Zell am See is a nice town offering more than Saalbach if shops/entertainments etc are important.

@DrLawn, I can't say I've heard of the Jauser Station, which is not to say that it doesn't exist. Toboggan evenings can be arranged with the Spielberghaus or the Maisalm in Saalbach or by hiring toboggans from the Reiterkogelbahn lift station at Hinterglemm and using the dedicated toboggan run there.

We went tobagganing last year from zelll at this place http://www.kohlschnait.at also know as rodelbahn. You did need a car to get there though, shortish drive out. €8 got you a lift up in a tractor, a gluewein and a sledge back down at your leisure, either 3km from the restaurant or you could walk up a further km to the top.

I'm looking at booking a last minute package for this Saturday. Had originally planned for the Arlberg but thinking Saalbach now due to the seemingly superior conditions. Currently on holiday from Australia and this is the last week I can do a trip.
However I have a three year old. Can anyone provide insight to a good kindy ski school in the area?

@DrLawn, are you maybe thinking of the Jausenstation Rammern Alm? It lies up the Löhnersbach valley which comes out on the south side of the main Glemmtal road near the hamlet of Jausern, not far from the bottom station of the Schönleiten gondola. From the information I have seen on the Internet I haven't been able to determine whether they now hire toboggans. Hi Guys , I`m new to this form , its a great source of information in fairness. Thanks to the contributors.
My question is this can you ski from the top of the Unterschwarzachbhan over to Saalbach , from the pistemap it looks like you could skirt across the top of the two pull lifts and then only be caught for a little distance to Saalbach. It would be great to do the night skiing and then do a short trip to Saalbach with the head lamp.
Piste maps can sometimes be deceiving this could be a long haul or be dodgy at night ?
