Nice photo-report here of yesterday (23/12) in Madonna di Campiglio in the Brenta Dolomites...looks all white up top and pistes complete with artificial lower down. The wooded landscape lower down here disguises somewhat the lack of natural snow...

Here at the moment and the Italian wizards are hard at work, and pistes are great if firm. -1 and snow cannons are at full blast in selva (11.30pm). High winds today and closure warnings, apparently val de Fassa pass closed at some point. We are having a ball!!!

Looking like there may be some snow on 3 and 7 Jan but it's been coming and going on the GFS ensembles for some time now.

Though it looks like it's coming down from the North, generally very little makes it across the Austrian border, though sometimes the Northern areas like Kronplatz catch some.
It is still all uncertain, involving which way the Jetstream buckles...with the right kind of buckling perhaps something will come up from the Adriatic in the New Year, it looks like the mountain ranges of Croatia & Bosnia will be getting a good dump off the Adriatic over the next few days.

@luigi, yes the hint of snow for the 3 and 7 has all but disappeared from the GFS 0z. At least it's cold though.

Looks like Thursday might bring a few cms if the front has enough energy to make it over the Lienzer Dolomiten.

Skied in Selva, Corvara, San Cassiano and Alpe di Suisi the past couple of days. Entirely man made but amazing piste coverage and quality. Everything is open and the weather is wonderful.

Another recent report, this time from the Andalo/Paganella area near Trento on 30th Dec...a lot of autumnal brown mountains with ribbons of white man-made...as ever, although not that pretty, it looks very skiable!

Northerly force 6 from Wednesday then down below minus 10 on Thursday. Sounds chilly.
The western alps are reporting hard packed runs and icy patches in places. That suggests higher humidity and warmer temperatures which are degrading the snow particularly low down. It's noticeable that there are no similar reports in the east. Snow loves dry air.

ARPAV for the Venetian Dolomites (inc Arabba, Cortina, etc) goes for 'a few flakes' during the course of Thursday and nothing for Fri-Sun...

I'd like them to be wrong, but I think I trust their interpretations more than the raw computer modelling that Snow-forecast uses that probably takes little account of local topography. The high ranges on the Austrian border are going to wring out most of the last of the moisture from the cold northerly front.

Ciampinoi webcam showed the Sochers piste (near the Salsong slope) floodlit for night-skiing this evening -- temperatures showed as -10 !!

Yes, wrong direction for significant snowfall in the Dolomites.
No more than a cm or two on the Plan de Gralba webcams this morning.

Kronplatz reported 1cm too, but Hintertux, about 20 miles North as the crow flies, on the Austrian side of the Zillertaler Alpen, had 30cm.
Chance of another dusting/light snowfall from the North on 10th/11th, but the mid-month Genoa Low scenario seems to have disappeared completely off the charts, High Pressure blocking across S France/Iberia.
When is Winter proper going to arrive in the Dolomites?? Last year it was 11/12 Jan when the 2-month snow-drought broke, but there wasn't really any game-changing snowfall until early Feb. By the time I arrived mid-Feb it was Winter Wonderland and we had a whole day & night of snow while we were there.

Arrived in Selva on 1st Jan and have enjoyed a good week of piste skiing en famille. As others have said, plenty of man made snow everywhere. No-one headed here should have any worries about the piste skiing. I haven't seen a rock or a bare patch all week.The investment, expertise and commitment here means that this is now a (relatively) ski-sure destination.
Cold today with some lifts affected by wind at times, so best not to risk heading too far away from your home valley. Still decent skiing for Jan though.

Not strictly Dolomites, but ski areas in the north of Bolzano province (South Tyrol) benefited most...
Speikboden, close to the Austrian border, but just 10 miles N of Kronplatz, got the most out of the last 24hrs with 22cm at 2400m
Ladurns nestled just S of the Brenner got 20cm at 2000m
Solda/Sulden am Ortler with it's glacier skiing reported 15cm this morning.
A few other areas reported 5-10cm.
Best in the Dolomites was Carezza with 2cm.

This morning's Bergfex (which I think is ultimately ECM based) for the Groednertal showing 8cm for the 11th and a similar amount for two days later

Would be nice if it materialises as at least it would improve things visually but I'm not holding my breath. Not showing on the 0z GFS (yet). And the system looks to be coming from the north again and we know from Thursday that snow has difficulty wheezing over the Alps.

Sorry to dissapoint but the GFS 00z ensembles are not painting a pretty picture re any upcoming precipitation for the Dolomites:
The ECMWF looks initially a bit more promising with what looks like a Genoa Low forming around the 11th. But 24 hours later, its completely dissapeared. On the GFS 00z run, for the same time period (10th to the 11th) a low forms over Sardinia but then positions itself a bit further South, thus not managing to affect the Dolomites.

I shouldn't think that will be necessary, the main lifts are running, the links to Zoldo, Palafavera & Selva di Cadore are open and 52km of man-made piste are available today across the Civetta area, it's cold enough to make more...just it would all look prettier with some natural snowfall to complement it!
