Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

We arrived mid afternoon so missed our chance at TV stardom rolling eyes. Nice afternoon out though.

Saturday was good. Sunday a bit drizzly to start but cleared up and good skiing if typically Pennine ; 80% snow 20% grass.

First trip up to Raise yesterday Very Happy. Really enjoyed it despite:
- Tough slog to get up there from Glenridding (over 2 hrs with killer weight packs (skis/boots/crampons/ice axe etc), including time to get boots and skis on and start skinning from top of the zig zags.
- Being told repeatedly 'You should have been here yesterday' rolling eyes - bit foggy; patchy snow in parts after overnight thaw - but we loved the experience and the set up - we've joined the club.

Popped up to Yad today. 0C at bottom; bitter wind chill at top; still fair cover on top two thirds of the hill; (almost) boiler plate washboard snow....but still managed to enjoy ourselves as it softened a bit Very Happy.

Great effort.

Still some big drifts around on west facing slopes from the NE blizzard two weeks ago. Unfortunately the weather breaks down after today and it looks windy, mild and wet over the next 5 days or so Sad

Time then to get the Christmas shopping out the way, whilst we're not being bothered by the skiing Laughing

Snow cover at Yad Moss this morning. Not enough for skiing yet but a bit more should fall this pm as north easterly showers arrive. Below freezing all day tomorrow.

Oh yeah?? Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Quite probably the thinnest snow we've ever skied Laughing - the odd thing was the cover looked thicker looking down the slope (ie as seen on the webcams) than looking up the slope...rolling eyes. Conditions could be best described as marginal.

Still, it was nice to get out and welcome in 2017 with a few turns....plus a bit of tussock hopping and a combat ski to the roadside on no more than about 5mm Shocked of snow....So you were right on both scores Peter S wink - not really enough snow for skiing and it was snowing when we left at about 4pm.

Looks better because the snow came from the north east i.e. Downslope.

More showers falling at the moment and several Members are going up tomorrow.....but we are not expecting it to be skiable.......other than for the truly dedicated like mr and Mrs mountainaddict. snowHead

Raise could be in for a shout by Friday as long as it doesn't go too northerly, at which point the northern Lakes become sheltered by the Galloway hills.

Yad Moss tends to be a bit rubbish with a westerly and particularly a WNW. Its straight up the slope and even more sheltered than the northern Lakes. Weardale may fare better ?

Worth keeping the weekend free for the keen. Laughing

Chilly.

Rubbish direction for YM. Perfect for Raise and Weardale (if the showers get across that far).

Raise is open today. A little more snow is falling this morning. The forecast is good today and I would expect there to be plenty of fun up there even though the runs will be a bit thin and narrow in some places. The cold snow should be excellent and the ground should be thoroughly freeze dried making any snowy grass skiable.

Weardale are also hoping to run today and should be able to push a bit of snow around.

As expected the snow just blew straight up the run at Yad Moss.

Tomorrow the snow will turn to rain but it does look colder again by mid week.

Mrs MA and I popped up to Weardale yesterday:

- Chains required for the road because of a very thick frost (the first steep bit had me sledging backwards without the chains...Shocked)
- Conditions, er...'tussocky' wink - but proper linked (ie non-combat) turns were achievable top to bottom on F1...on about 5mm of snow at the bottom of the run. Nice to be out, as ever Very Happy

mountainaddict,

Have you considered a search on eBay for some grass skis? You could put them in your rucksack for the ascent and then visit the Northern Grasshouse all year long! Toofy Grin

Into the freezer from Wednesday as the easterly begins. That's a good direction for Yad Moss if we can get some precipitation. Looks like snow tonight but probably too mild for it to stick around tomorrow.

Raise may be a possibility, although a south easterly isn't ideal there.

Getting closer Puzzled

Not skiable at YM today but that looks about to change with 10cms tomorrow morning drifting down and across the runs on a NE wind.

We intend to carry out an inspection in the morning and will try to run the tow tomorrow if it becomes skiable.

The B6277 may be difficult from Middleton however if the snow is heavy and is blown off the moors and over the carriageway. Sunday looks very windy but Monday and Tuesday may be ok?

No go today at Yad Moss but the snow is filling in the runs which now look to be skiable. We will be going up tomorrow and hope to run the tow from 10:30. Could be a struggle.

Plan for full on winter conditions, on the access roads as well as the slope. Wrap up warm and don't forget a spade to dig off the carriageway if necesssry to let the plough past. don't forget your goggles :s 8

Wow that was a wild day. Haven't had one of those at YM for a long time. Memories of the 70s and 80s. Lots of very resilient skiers and riders up there today. The ride down was great. It was just the ride up into the teeth of a freezing 40 mph snow storm that took a bit of getting used to.

We'll be doing it all again tomorrow on Monday. Just a lot less windy. Phew. Time for a cup of tea. Smile

Weardale report, Sun 12 Feb 2017:
- Chains needed for road up - cover fairly decent; windblown/scoured in a few places; tricky with drifts/grassy bits off F2 tow.
- Temp -1C at car park.
- Visibility ok-ish on lower slopes; poor/very foggy higher up.
- Wind ferocious - and worsened throughout the day. Hard going/extreme off top tow.
- F1 tow unfortunately broken all day and didn't operate - a shame as F1 run had best snow.
- Always nice to be out - but a very wild day on the hill.
- New heaters in the day lodge were marvellous - wow, what a difference!

Heavy icing overnight. Took a while to knock it off the top pylons. Good fast skiing and plenty of snow at the top but poor visibility at times and the snow became increasingly saturated. Still no queues. snowHead
