Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Can I be VP for fiddling with bindings on the exit to lifts? I feel like I could really stretch my creativity in finding new things to adjust when my skiing companions are itching to get off down the piste!

I got a Burton team video (VHS!) free with my first proper snowboard (Rippey pro-model!) after learning on an ex-rental RadAir. It was in NTSC format so only played in black and white on UK TVs. I almost wore it out watching it round and round. Also got me into AC/DC (Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap) and The Pixies (Gigantic).

In the middle of all kinds of rad freestyle riding with Terje, Rippey, Powers, Teter, Downing and the rest, there was maybe 20 seconds of Craig Kelly riding trees in epic powder, just charging down the fall-line, bouncing off all the lumps and bumps. That was it, that was all I ever wanted to do on a snowboard. Still is. I was out in Val d'Isere snowboarding when I heard he was killed in the avalanche.

Is Knapton in Breck? Peak 7 terrain can be surprisingly quiet for the first hour or so even on a Saturday.

That's a sure sign of someone who lives with the resort in their backyard, or seasonaire? The rest of us will be up all hours on the week or two we're out.

So if for nothing else this thread was worthwhile. - actually I think it's worth watching some of the old stuff so you can laugh at Shaun Palmer's hair, Tom Sims' tache, everyone's fashion

& then be grateful that you didn't have to ride on some of the equipment back then. I think Glen Plake actually claims to have invented the highback binding cos he was helping Palmer (who was a partner in crime in the Tahoe scene) to improve his set up.

@Dave of the Marmottes, Aha, the days when if you buttered a Forum board the logo inset in the base would peel off the glue and stop you like hitting a rock when you laid it back down, or when you'd nick the nose on summat and half a day later you'd have foot of delamination flapping in the breeze Evil or Very Mad

My 5ft daughter is a little carving machine. Smile During her BASI2 SB training she was told not to carve everything. Confused

I was never quite sure why and she was also rather quizzical. Maybe her trainer wasn't so hot in the carving dept.?

wink Good powder turns are closer to carved turns than side-slip stuff though.

I would guess it's because they wanted to teach them how to teach less strong riders to side-slip. But the first idea could be right too.

Two reasons:

1. A lot of BASI2 is doing demos for beginner / intermediate riders. If you're carving when you're supposed to be demoing a basic or standard turn, it's not very helpful for the client!

2. You can definitely get "too carvy" when doing short radius, full-arc turns ("steeps" in BASI-speak) on steep pitches. It kind of works up to a point, then it doesn't work. It gets too steep/icy to carve the turn and you blow out and slide down the hill on your ar$e. The kind of turn they're looking for here is very rounded, very grippy, but skidded.

Carving is very-much assessed though!
