Thinking of a trip to France or Austria in Mid April this year, would like to get some off-piste in. What's a good bet based on current snow depths? I guess the best bets are the high altitude resorts?

I would wait till you see the snow depths after this week (and weekend's) snow, it is going to change things dramatically (and hopefully). The snowline over the weekend will be a big player. But yes - a high altitude resort. You will be in mainly for spring skiing (unless you are lucky and get fresh for a couple of hours) so you will be looking for a place with good off piste depths - the webcams are a bit deceiving this year as the pistes in a lot of places are mainly man made.

Definitely want altitude if making an advance decision. Typically in mid-April lower slopes will be getting slushy but early afternoon.

Val Thorens, Tignes, Val d'Isere, Hintertux and Zermatt are going to be the only places in the Alps high enough for powda at that time of year.
