Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Intro ski tour

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi

I'd like to do an intro ski tour so I can learn to skin (and thus do a hut to hut). There's a few people I've seen who do these such as Off Piste Performance, High Alpine Guides and Mountain Tracks, and recommendations/tips? Was thinking a two/three day course.

Many thanks

Alex

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Alex, I've skied with Mountaintracks, not the course you're after but they are an excellent outfit. Plus you could get to ski in Val d'Anniviers, perfect combo.

Action Outdoors (UCPA) do an “intro to ski touring” course. Maybe they even do a short break. Even if you paid for a week and only did half it would still be good value.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Did mine with this fella https://www.alpin-ism.com/about/team/terry-ralphs

Very good.

Actually just remembered a did a posthumous TR 14 years after the event https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=1993720

If you can walk up hill you can more or less work out how to skin on your own. It's all the other skills that are important, you're very much getting into mountaineering territory once you leave the piste. You really have to know what you're doing there.

Not really the course the op was after

"This week is mostly ‘gravity-assisted’ ie we will use lifts to go uphill & ski down"

I'm sure he does/could do something that would fit the bill but cant see a good fit on the website.

Another endorsement for ISM, @Layne refers toTerry Ralphs who still runs the ski touring and off-piste programme.
Terry is extremely approachable and would happily chat through your requirements and how the ISM programme could accommodate you.
