Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi
We’ve been to 1650 twice and love the resort and the skiing but whilst it’s nice and quiet it’s a schlep to get anywhere . I was thinking about La Tania next year instead as more family friendly/pedestrianised/cheaper/tree lined skiing/more central to 3 Valleys. Although I’m worried about access in a poor snow year.
We’re a family of 5, kids ages 16,14,12. I prefer blues and easy reds, the rest of them will ski most things.
Any thoughts/recommendations? My only requirement is accommodation with a fire!!! Oh and we’re Scottish half term which is from 9th Feb which is saving us a fortune- happy days!

@RosieL, can't see any issue with access. I think even in bad years you've been able to ski back to La Tania by Xmas and up to Easter.
Gondola up as well so no issue with needing snow on any drag lifts!
Blue down to La Tania is a fanastic run as well.
Can you tell I like La Tania!! Not been for many years, heading back in a few weeks!
In fact check here for some facts https://www.latania.co.uk/resort/rguide.htm

The blue Folyères run from the top gondola station is now helped by 38 snow cannons and it's own snow making reservoir which were installed for the 2001/02 season along the entire length of the run - this has kept it open from the start to the end of the season ever since except for 2 years - one a late start by 2 weeks and 1 an early finish by 2 weeks - of course up and downloading via the gondola was still available.
New for 2008/9 were snow cannons on the Bouc Blanc (red) and Boulevard des Arolles (blue) pistes above the gondola thus guaranteeing this link from 1850 and more investment in cannons on the green run has continued since.
In addition to snow cannons, La Tania is North facing, has sheltered tree runs and the blue piste is groomed every single night. This is what keeps the run open all season down to 1450m, as we always say ASPECT > ALTITUDE in keeping the snow... |

Sorry but I was there in bad snow and that blue run down is dreadful. Gets skied out over the 'humps' and becomes very icy! We chose to drive round to Courcheval in those conditions!

BS. We're talking second week of February. Peak season. Best temperatures. Deepest snow cover. If you think Folyeres will be dreadful then, you can't ski.
Folyeres is quite possibly the best home run in France. I've certainly never skied a better one (or anywhere else in Europe for that matter).

Wow thanks all. Have been quoted £3.7K for 5 of us in a chalet in 1650 accommodation and all food etc... not flights. which is a pretty good price. I’ll look into La Tania prices. I loved those tree lined routes and the ones down to La Praz too...gutted I’m having to wait another year to go!!! Even skied the black Jockeys (when it had been pusted) which was a great confidence boost for me!

@RosieL, Id go La Tania rather than Le Praz.
I’m just heading there now for a week.
Better base than 1650 IMO.
Could checkout any chalets if you highlight any ‘possibles’ this week.
There’s also a well positioned large chalethotel, mid range price and quality, if that’s your type of thing. Has pool and wellness stuff.
My friend did a good one with Ski Amis a few weeks ago.
It’s very easy to get from La Tania to the slopes above 1650.
Happy hunting.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Pretty sure you'd get that price or better off the LT specialists. You could try http://www.snowretreat.co.uk/. She (Andrea) hasn't got 2019 prices up yet but if you give her a call I'm sure she'll give you an idea. I did a punter week with them this year and they're fine apart from being slightly tight on the wine.
Both Murettes (the red) and Jockeys are excellent runs into LP. Also, re. my previous post, if you can ski Jockeys, then Folyeres home will not be an issue even if you are unlucky and it's not at its best.
