Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Lot of metal to be carting around for 9 months . You'll love airport security.
Best of luck for a really good recovery.

@sequoiaborg, Oh my! That is some metalwork! Can't see you getting a ski boot on over that. Hope it heals very quickly. Have they talked about checking your bone density? I don't like the sound of 'leg falling to pieces'!

Latest xray, taken today. Xray was put into a computer which threw up a load of adjustments on the screw adjustable struts which I have to set myself over the next week or so to get the bone pieces in perfect alignment. The orthopod said it might be 'a little uncomfortable'.

Wow! That is some impressive (not necessarily in a totally good way for you) hardware, and what it's holding together's pretty impressive too. You didn't do it by halves, did you! Good luck for it all coming together right for you, literally and otherwise.

Thanks for all the 'get well' messages.

I've been encouraged to use the bad leg as normally as possible and can walk very short distances without crutches. Despite the frame I'm actually allowed to drive. Improves the quality of life enormously. Am redressing it at home now so can have a shower with dressings removed, no more bin liners and duct tape.

Still feel like a prat using the electric chair trolley things in the supermarket but it's that or hopping behind a normal trolley.

Still haven't run out of stuff to watch on Netflix.

Still followstuff on here despite knowing that there's no skiing for me for at least 18 months, possibly considerably longer.

Hey @HurtleVery Happy

Just had a camera stuck in there on Monday under general anaesthetic! I thought I was past the diagnosis stage a while back, but the consultant wasn't happy with some uncertainties in the MRI report so wanted a peek for himself... Waiting to go back and find out what he saw.

My frame was fitted in early April in the UK after a poor job of fixing my leg in Italy in March. After the operation in Somerset I was told to expect to have the frame removed in January '19.

Went back to see my orthopod today and after looking at today's xrays he said it was ready to 'dynamize' my leg. This involves removing a support strut fron the contraption which allows the broken bone to bear weight. If no problems by next week then the frame comes off in a couple of weeks. What a result. I'm genuinely flabbergasted and absolutely chuffed to bits

I know that there is a way to go before I'm back to normal, loads of physio etc required. At the moment my right leg is the most hench and muscular that it has ever been, it's ace.Having said that my left one looks like a sickly sparrow's leg.

Can't praise the NHS enough, they've been outstanding every step of the way.

Initially I was told no skiing this season......Maybe?

@sequoiaborg, great progress. Good luck with the next week or two and hopefully removal of that frame.
Sounds like a wonderful service from the NHS.

Congratulations sequoiaborg that is really really good news, take it very slowly and gently when the frame comes off and then it'll be physio, physio, physio, physio until your sparrow leg looks more like the other one but it will in due course. Skiing this next season? I suspect now but just maybe a little trip to the sunshine en alpe in April at least for the views and the ambience and the lovely alpine food and perhaps a couple of gentle ventures out on the baby slopes just to get started! All the very best a pretty long and sad journey but you are getting there.

Touch wood the bone is happy with a bit of weight through it... The thought sends a shiver down my timbers.

Booked in to get the damn bear trap removed today. General anesthetic. Likely to be a little tender afterwards. Edit. Seems that too many people broke themselves locally last night. Postponed until hopefully tomorrow.

@sequoiaborg, a word of caution...

My break wasn't quite as bad as yours, but Bourg St Maurice hospital made a reasonable job of it. I came home and went to see a UK consultant, to monitor the progress of the healing. I only had internal metalwork. I wasn't weight bearing for 4 months. After being given the OK to walk again, I started doing so but was in quite a bit of pain if walking far. I had an inflatable boot, which helped a lot, but walking in general was not much fun when you find it hurting... and then have to walk the same distance back home! Until I had been walking for a month, I wasn't signed off to drive (over cautious consultant) despite having an automatic. My insurance co over ruled him and said if I could walk without crutches, I could drive.

The cautionary note is this... 7 months after the break, I was coming back from the pub with a group of mates and put my foot on the edge of a pothole in the pavement. My leg snapped like a dead twig and was broken in half before I hit the deck. Basically, although the bone graft material had worked well in getting the pieces to join back up, the veins had not really started to feed the bones properly and my Tib was indeed like a piece of dead wood inside my leg. It had no lateral strength at all, but the MRIs didn't show this.

I was fitted with a Tibial Nail, which was fantastic. This is a titanium rod that runs from my knee to my ankle. I was able to walk (albeit in considerable pain) with my physios the next day! It's now been nearly 3 years and I forget it's all still inside me.

Please, please be careful about rushing back onto skis. Give your leg at least a year to fully heal after you start walking. The compression of walking helps strengthen the fractures but only time will let the veins re-grow and your bones achieve full strength again.

Got my leg back. So nice to be able to lie down and get comfortable in bed.

Still have to wear a giant padded velcro clown boot during the day. Next check 4 weeks.
All good.

Getting there a bit at a time thanks.

Obviously lots of physio and hopefully I'll be getting on my bike soon, weather permitting.

Still limping slightly but am trying to 'walk through' the limp and it is slowly disappearing.

Next appointment with the orthopod is early Feb.
