Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

High protection sunscreen

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

Please can anyone recommend the best and maximum protection sunscreen they find works a treat when skiing? I don't care how it looks on my face - I've heard of a product called Zinka which goes on white opaque. I am getting brown pigmentation on my cheeks when in the sun, even though I'm well protected with cream/hat/glasses etc. Thanks in advance! Cool

You mean, "a tan"?

If you can source it, I like this Neutrogena stuff I picked up in Brazil. https://www.neutrogena.com/sun/ultra-sheer-dry-touch-sunscreen-broad-spectrum-spf-55/6868790.html

I haven't noticed it in Europe though.

Thanks for info and link! I'll take a look. No, it's not a tan😄.....it's just patches of hyper-pigmentation. I seem prone to it - I'm very fair skinned. 👍

I've been using this stuff

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MANBI-TUB-E-STICK-SKIING-LIP-BALM-SKI-SUNBLOCK-SUNCREAM-/201515554825?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10&var=500697493480

It's F50, has a lip protection dispenser, and more importantly - it's on a string that goes around your neck so you never forget it or lose it!!!

I think the pigmentation may be called melasma, but I've no idea what causes it (sunlight?) or if you can get rid of it.

@Suzy2001, Boots Soltan Once SPF 50. It doesn't go into your skin, so you have to be careful with fabrics, but you couldn't be much whiter than me Laughing

@Suzy2001, best protection is a face mask. 100% of UV rays are blocked and it does not get wiped away with sweat, and no more cold nose.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Neoprene-Full-Face-Reversible-Mask-Motorcycle-Skiing-Snowboarding-Bike-Ski-Quad/361831054138?hash=item543ecfbb3a:m:mk-zROlDTpU40MxFZIIoYwg

I tend to go for factor 50 kids spray which sometimes comes in green. Provided it has 4 stars and UVA /UVB protection. If it says kids on it, it probably does not contain lots of carcinogenic chemicals. Although it is worth checking, as some still do. Also check its use by date, and use it within one year of opening. (I never do that, and had continued using a piz buin stick for almost 15 years)

Whilst it is nice to get a specific lotion, I tend to look out for special offers in off season and buy in advance. I never go into the shop by the lift queue in the ski resort and buy sun tan lotion (or even a second pair of ski goggles) as they are so expensive.

I've never seen the masks before! I've got a snood but sometimes find it too hot over my nose but the mask has cut outs. They're a good price too! I might have to go for a plain one though.....not sure my hubby and children would ski with Spider-Man!😄

Sounds like you are talking about a zinc oxide based sun block, the stuff that goes opaque on your skin in white or comes in colours.

We use a chemical sun screen called Sunsense (an Australian Brand now available in the UK, Ocado has it). Hopefully the Aussies know their stuff. The gel is good in that its not greasy and doesnt seem to stain clothes as much as the normal white stuff. It comes in factor 50.

I think Which just did an article on high spf screens. Have a read of that.

But the best protection is as stated above is a face mask.

I’ve heard this before, but having just checked the cabinet containing 5 suncreams from 3 brands, none display any kind of date at all. There is also no info about using within a certain time frame.

Incidentally, the star rating seems to be a UK thing, as none of the bottles over here display that, annoyingly.

That's just what I was talking about! The zinc based ones seem a bit thicker and more protective... I've seen Sunsense in John Lewis too, so can get hold of some if it's zinc/titanium based. I like the idea of The Mask - definitely going to order one of those. Thank you for info😊

Yes, I think Boots Soltan brought in the star rating apparently. It's handy to know it for the uva protection. I agree it would be better if an expiry date was put on as I never write on bottle when I opened it!

As far as I have seen the Sunsense is only chemical based and doesnt come in the zinc oxide based block, but its pretty good.

@Suzy2001, melasma can be caused by oral contraceptives too, and pregnancy.

I use Sunsense Daily face SPF 50 and tinted. Not zinc based, but skin friendly and recommended by our local dermatologists.

Sounds like a good recommendation then, thanks. Apparently heat can make melasma worse too and I wore loads of cream etc on our recent holiday and I've noticed it's still a little worse - at least I won't have the heat problem skiing! Best wishes.

@Suzy2001, I'm a UK pharmacist and this was recommended to me by an Australian pharmacist who used to post on here. I've used it ever since, and although i do have some sun damage/melasma it hasn't worsened. I use it most days in summer at home, and always when skiing.

I'm going to give that one a try. The only reason I was going to give the zinc based ones a go was because Melasma can apparently be worse after using chemical sun blocks...but reading things on the internet, well, Melasma can be caused by just existing! Thank you for your help - very kind. 😊

Mrs LY was recently recommended a product called Altruist Dermatologist Sunscreen by a skin cancer specialist. Think Amazon have it. She's been using it over the summer but not whilst skiing (yet).

Fine unless you get an allergic reaction to it which I did. Changed to Nivea which was fine until they changed their formula and had to change again. Sainsbury’s own brand has been ok since.

P20 SPF50. Apply once and you're done. Well it works for me - just got back from 3 weeks in the tropical sun trying to wash the stuff off in the surf and I can't do it. Hand-baggage restrictions mean you may need to decant it or pay more for small quantities.

@geepee, Yes, a lot of suncreams have a huge list of ingredients that can irritate our skin if we're susceptible..... I've found the same with my daughters.

@Suzy2001, It’s mainly my eyes that react. It took me a few years to realise that it was the sun cream. I always thought it might be wind affecting the eyes and causing them to water and puff up but now I know it’s just an allergic reaction, so I avoid it completely by using a trusted cream. Just been caught out by the Nivea change but knew it must be the sun cream and they had re-branded it.

@geepee, I’ve had that with every suncream I’ve ever used, there’s something in it that’s really irritating to eyes, but I’ve just assumed they’re all the same. I’m really really careful not to get it in my eyes – contact lenses before suncream is the main solution. I’ve had allergic reactions to medication, but it was another level of reaction entirely.

@Scarlet, I’m always careful not to get it my eyes but I suppose that some may get there via sweat from the forehead etc. I don’t have any problems with the one I’m using now.

@geepee, Ah, the horrible eye stinging....I've had that this summer-I wear facial suncream everyday as I work outdoors with young children and if it gets in my eyes it makes them so sensitive and they water a lot....especially if I'm in bright light.

@philwig, I've got some of this and agree it's good stuff but I've never tried it on my face as it seems quite pungent and I thought it may sting my eyes! I used Ultrasun this year on a summer holiday but didn't find it as good as P20 after being in water.....it's not cheap either. Thank you for info.

no. I do know what you mean - it smells and feels like a chemical application more than a skin cream! I do spray it onto the palm of my hand and apply to face with fingers rather than spray it at my eyes though!

@Suzy2001, the cost of some of these products makes me wince, as does reading the chemical composition of some of them. Nasty compounds. All tested of course, but nasty nontheless - benzoates mainly. My son is a tough old boot and has no known allergies, but his skin goes very nasty when using these very liquid sunscreens. I managed to find some Piz Buin Glacier Cream - really excellent stuff, which lacks benzoates and uses titanium dioxide as the main screen element, which has some concerns when inhaled in bulk as dust, but since it is held in the cream (and washed off at the end of the day?) is pretty inoccuous. My young son’s skin does not flare up at all with this cream and it’s a damn good sunscreen.

@valais2, Yes you wonder what makes one so much more expensive than another! We used Ultrasun this summer but didn't find it great once you'd been in water. I haven't tried the Piz Buin one but it sounds more gentle on the skin....my children get red eczema on their face after using some of them. Thanks for your help.

@Suzy2001, go to the baby/child section for sunscreens up to 100spf. I have to use this daily now after surgery Confused But there are plenty that are non greasy and Neutrogena has a dry spray that is water and sweat resistant. Doesn't sting my eyes either as I have to use this on my face. I'm USA based so if you have a problem PM me and I'll go shopping.
