Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Going to be adding in Easter Island or Gallapogos as well. Again, Google corrects the spelling for me.

Actually considering all that makes up the skiing holiday, the base elements are not too expensive. £750 for a HB single room in St Anton with flights and transfers does not sound too bad. Adding the lift pass, spending money (probably not too much) and the off-piste guiding makes it expensive.

Am off to the Maldives in November for about £3K each. That's expensive and add about £800 for diving Shocked The Preseason bash (yes it is early season) will be about £600 when I add avios flights.

I often go the Tignes with Mountainsun Ltd for a few hundred quid all in for a few days skiing. Fabulous value.

Currently looking for three nights hotel in Fort Lauderdale post a Caribbean cruise (£3K) and any hotel the wife will consider is about a grand room only Mad

Appreciate that not everyone is happy to fritter away their hard earned dosh on holiday but when you compare the cost, and the smile per buck you get on a skiing holiday I do not think it is too expensive. Fortunately still working full-time, mortgage paid and getting a pension on top too so can afford all these things.

Mr Egg - are you diving in the Galapagos. Would love to do that!

@hawkesbaynz,
Galapagos depends on if the other half is allowed to carry annual leave over.
I would love to do PADI & have looked into it several times.
Piccu & Easter Island are on my bucket list though... but she prefers Galapagos.
So guess it will come down to ease of flight. Pity that LATAM no longer fly Cusco to Santiago
Otherwise it would be easier.

I've found it's a lot cheaper organising things yourself rather than using an operator, especially at half term. At half term, it's the flights that push up the costs - the hotel prices remain reasonably constant. Just need to be flexible in terms of where you fly to and accept there will be a bit more hassle.

For example, at half term for my family, currently it's around £1700 just for flights into Salzburg (£3300 from Newcastle!!!) + another £300 for the transfer to Saalbach. That's £2K just to get to the bloody resort. Instead, we're flying into Munich for £320 + hiring a car for £150, so under £500 for all of us. Self catering accommodation £600. Cheapest self catering with flights from Crystal is £4600 or £6000 for half board Shocked

You know it makes sense.
It can be as cheap or as expensive as you want to make it. 4 adults driving to a resort, taking their own gear in a no thrills self catered Air BNB, with pre-purchased food from UK/cheap supermarket on route and willing to cook every night? Well it'll be a cheap get away regardless of the time. Want to go package, with kids in school holidays....well prepare to pay a lot more. It's life.

As for the food/drink costs you pay when in resort or up the mountain...well again it's part of going away. I don't mind paying the best part of 10 euros for a pint up the top of a mountain considering the man and machine power it has taken for it to get up there! Better value for money IMO than paying, for example for food and drink at a motorway services in this country!

@crudeFool, Friends of ours flew to Stuttgart last year, then hired a car - dirt cheap (and not a bad drive) compared with the usual expensive alternatives.
£600 sounds very cheap for half-term week!

two years ago. First week of March in La Plagne in catered 3* chalet for £560 (flights, transfers and half board).
La Plagne is the closest the Alps gets to Majorca, so I feel it's a fair comparison.
If you are looking at prices for 3V or Zermatt then you need to compare it to high season Barbados or Maldives.

La Plagne is a nice resort but not exclusive. Ditto Majorca.

I'm not having a go at you specifically here, Queenie, but this sort of attitude is pretty tiresome. Mr Egg may be a bit of an acquired taste as a poster, but we all knew what he meant by michhu patchu and the Gallopoogos. Getting all pedantic about spelling doesn't really add much, except in a debate about spelling.

...also on the subject "why so expensive..."

The PdS has done away with indigenous discounts on the season pass.

So it's either 3266 for the season ( 2 adults , 3 teens) , or 2700 if you can rustle up that sort of cash before the end of September.
Just off to look down the back of the sofa ...

So this makes it cheaper for people who already have more disposable income ( and have this loose change lying around), and penalises those who don't - that's certainly one way to keep riff-raff like me off the slopes this winter.

@Mr.Egg, I'm guessing you were in the south west of the island, Santa Ponsa, Palma Nova, or the unbearable Magaluf. Those three resorts definitely cater for the C2's, D's, and E's. However, the east coast resorts, any of the Cala's, cater exclusively for C1's, and B's, the west coast resorts, Andratx, Soller, cater to B's and A's. If you go to the north of the island, Port De Pollenca, you're into the playground of the super-rich.

If the main breadwinner works in an office or has a professional qualification or is a senior or middle manager, then s/he is deemed middle-class. Families whose breadwinner has a manual job or relies on state benefits are deemed working class."
