Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

AUSTRIA FROM 23-MARCH TO 13-APR

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
hey guys, im a brazilian snowboarder, intermediate level (struggle on some reds depending on the terrain) and im planning an austria trip for next winter as follows:

22/03-30/03 - ST ANTON
30/03-06/03 - SOLDEN
06/13-13/13 - ISCHGL

Ive been reading about solden and it does not seem worth to go all that way, so considering replacing if for LECH which is close to st anton and has some good cruising blue runs.
I understand st anton is more towards tough reds to advanced skiers
solden and ischgl mixed terrain with easy and some more challenging runs

any recommendations ?

thanks in advance! Cool

At that time of year, conditions could be pretty variable, but all of the places you've mentioned are likely to have lots of snow by the end of the season even if it is a little slushy by lunchtime. Also, if you struggle on some reds, you may find St Anton is very expensive for what you can comfortably slide on, but maybe the name is more important than the experience. Lech is part of the same skiing area - unless you think the apres experience will be significantly different on the other side of the hill, I'd choose one or the other. If Solden sounds a little limited for you, consider adding a day trip or two to Obergurgl.

You might also want to think about buying a season pass before December, and basing your trip around that instead of paying for 3 single week passes in expensive areas - the Salzburg Superski pass ( https://www.superskicard.com/en ) is €725 for the season, where St Anton is €289 for 6 days, Solden is €325, and Ischgl is €298 = €912. Then again, if you are staying in St Anton as part of a 3-week trip including return flights from Brazil, I'm guessing the cost is not really a concern...

thanks for your reply ousekjarr, well the name itself I dont really care, the thing is st anton i have prepaid already 50% non refundable so cant change that, my main doubt is between lech and going all the way to solden which seems to be a smaller/more limited resort.

not really sure what you mean by very expensive, ive been to val thorens past 3 seasons, tignes, val d'isere so I think st anton would be around the same cost for food/apres/lodging ?

Lech and St Anton are now connected by a ski lift. I would treat this as one area. NB St Anton or Zurs will be cheaper than Lech.

Ischgl is great the Silvretta lift pass covers Ischgl / Samnaun, Galtür, Kappl and See plenty for ten days

10 days at each would br OK. plenty terrain. But accomodation will be easier to book in week blocks sat to to sat.

If I had to choose a third resort Mayrhofen is better than Solden.

St Anton Ischgl and Mayrhofen have very active after ski scenes.

TOP TIP download at the end of the day at St Anton and Ischgl until you are confident on icy reds.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

You might want to wait to see see how the snow conditions turn out. I dont see much point in moving from St Anton to Lech as they are linked resorts and it is easy to get between the two. The apres scene is a good bit different so maybe that might be worthwhile. The advantage of Sölden might be that it has two glaciers and is linked by bus to Obergürgl which is pretty high. If conditions are not so good then it might be worth moving on from the Arlberg though I think unlikely as the Arlberg generally offers better skiing but maybe a change of scenery for a few days might be interesting. Sölden is not that far from either St Anton or Ischgl.

Personally I wouldnt worry too much about the whole "red" piste thing. Given the amount of time you are planning to spend boarding you are bound to get better / more confident. Take it easy for the first couple of days and then start to try more "difficult" options. Much also depends on conditions, in good conditions a black piste can be easier than a blue piste in icy conditions. A steeper run is not necessarily more difficult than a less steep one. At the time you are planning to go you will very likely find hard pistes first thing which soften during the morning that can become rather soft and chopped up by the end of the day, especially the final runs into the village. That situation is going to be the same in all these places.

St Anton has a reputation of being a really tough place to ski. Indeed there are lots of very challenging things if that's what you want (look up Valluga skiing on youtube) but there is plenty of more "normal" stuff too and especially with the improved connection to Zürs and Lech lots for anyone with average and above ability. A month spent split between the Arlberg and Ischgl is likely to be a great late winter holiday (wish I could take that much time out skiing.....)
