Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Northeast USA Skiing Forum

Poster: A snowHead
Hello everybody. My name is Greg, Founder of AlpineZone.com, The Northeast (USA) Guide to Mountain Adventure. Looks like this board has gotten off to a great start. I heard about it through a post from your admin on our forum so I thought I'd share a link back. If any of you plan to come to the US and ski in New England, come check us out. We use the same forum software as this board so things should feel familiar:

Good luck with the new forum here!

Hi Greg and welcome, I expect U has already asked you but do you know of a way to archive threads? Do these boards just grow and grow unless you use the pruning mechanism?

I suppose a good approach would be to create a separate locked forum to archive threads. Pruning deletes them permanently so if database size gets to be a concern, that's a good approach. Just understand that you can't get them back. Hope this helps!

Yes I had thought of that but I assume that the locked forum would still be in the database so there would no saving there? I haven't looked into the move forum facility but I assume it has to be on the same site/server?

Sounds like server space/database size is your concern? If so, pruning is the only way to reduce the size. Not sure if you can export pruned threads, or not. Perhaps you can do a database backup before each time you prune where you can reconstruct the archive later if need be (may be somewhat tricky). The "move forum" function justs moves them within the existing installation/database - more of where they are positioned than anything...

Thanks Greg, just thinking about future requirements and sites growing without end! I think bandwidth may become an issue before DB size is likely to.
