Poster: A snowHead
|
Am planning on buying a safety kit.
The DTS Tracker and Mammut Barryvox transcievers have been recommended to me.

I'm thinking of going for
1) Mammut Barryvox transciever
2) Ortovox 240cm probe
3) Ortovox Professional Shovel
Would anybody in the know point me in the direction of anything else?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

DB, I've got the Ortovox M2 as I wanted a digital transceiver, but there are some new models since I got mine. Pistehors is probably as good as you'll get for independent advice. I've also got the Shovel and probe, supplemented by a first aid kit and bivovac survival blanket. I just hope I never have to use any of it.
I'd recommend Facewest as back-country suppliers, they know their stuff are helpful and have keen prices.
You do need some tuition, we're lucky, the guides in La Rosiere run courses for the pisteurs every year and we can piggy-back on those.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

It's funny u mention them David@traxvax, because Facewst are the newest entry in the snowShops.
If U go to their site via a link from here, anything u buy there will earn a little commission for snowHeads: Facewest- Avalanche Safety gear.

DB, David offers some excellent advice. I bought a Mammut Barryvox transciever last season and would recommend it; though fortunately I've not used it in anger. It's worth doing regular test burials in snow (preferably multiple burials) for practise.
I also bought an Ortovox plastic shovel (and probe) - so far I've only used it to dig my car out luckilly; I'm thinking of upgrading it to a metal shovel though.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Red Dave,
.
Why are you thinking of upgrading to a metal shovel, are the plastic shovels not sturdy enough?

DB, the consensus appears to be that they're not.

DB, they're fine in normal snow situations; however avalanche debris sets somewhat harder, and for that I'd prefer a sturdier metal shovel.

DB, Make sure whoever you ski will be also equipped, because you will rely on their gear for YOUR safety...
