i was checking out the gorgeous ladies diamond jacket and had my heart set on it.
but someone on another forum said spyder wasn't cool - it was for ski instructors (are they not cool either?)
so here's the question - if the clean, slick lines of spyder and the sheer cost of owning apiece isn't cool then what is?
(not that i'm going to necessarily buy the coolest thing on the market - i genuinely like the look of the spyder stuff but i was just curious!)
what's the view on stuff like postcard, killy etc?
advice welcome...
cheers
looks cool to me!

Nope. Just no. Reminds me of middle age women with ear warmers.

Spyder just screams "more money than sense" to me. I pretty much always mentally link it to rich british tourists when I see people wearing it...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Spyder kit is at the expensive end of the market, but uses hi-tech materials and seems to be generally well made. I have a few bits of Spyder clothing and it has served me well, including some brutally cold temperatures on the glacier on Tignes. You're right to say that it's worn by a lot of instructors who will be required to be on the hill regardless of the weather. If you think it looks good on you does it really matter what anyone else thinks...?

queen_sheba, I have a similar looking spyder jacket and sallies (Ruby I think) - dunno if its the same spec though. mine is black, which I prefer. I don't think it is cool necessarily, but is is warm, is very good quality and yes it did cost a lot but it will last for years.
Nadenoodlee, I am a middle aged woman with ear warmers, but if its v cold I wear fur trapper hat.

thanks very much! sounds great - if it wears well and doesn't change fashion with the season (ie the stuff folk were wearing last year - i heard about tweed and pinstripes - did anyone actually see anyone wearing that!?) then it should last for years to come.
I'm not really into buying something ultra colourful or fashionable, just subtle, sophisticated, well made and long-lasting. seems to fit the bill.
what brands are other people fond of?

My wife has the same set up. It is highly technical.Great fabrics. I would put it more on the "chique" side rather than cool.
I wasn't that impressed when looking on the walls of my local shop, but on the slopes it looks great(which is where it should be worn)

lol - unless it gets a bit chilly up here (edinburgh) - i had my one from last year on (my £50 tk maxx job) this morning as it was baltic!
but you are right - chic was defo what i was going for! i was just surprised that such a highly technical brand was not respected much! and wondered what people actually thought was good...
cheers

Looks a nice jacket for a women but it is white.....and apart from losing you in the snow...it might be hard to keep looking that good.
Bracket alongside Killy, Prada, Postcard bla bla...coolest thing for women is Kjus, IMV, but you got to be able to carry it off

queen_sheba, there's a lot of fake Spyder kit on eBay. They control their distribution and prices carefully so if it is wonderfully cheap there might be a reason for that

hiya - the jacket was on a site call captainscabin...maybe it wasn't selling and he's reduced it to get rid of the range?
yes you are right about ebay though - would only buy from someone selling a second hand one (ie bought but changed size or as a present)
if you look around on google you can find cheaper prices - i wouldn't spend £500 on one either - however good it was - it pays to shop around.
however - there's always the option of wearing last years kit and taking a sneaky week in dubai before xmas (my pal works for the hilton so discount room rates!) and turning up on the slopes with a tan?
hmmm...choices, choices.....

Frosty the Snowman, if I could afford it it woud still be a "maybe"
There is a reasonable limit I beleive. I do have a pair of Spyder pants which I really like and the price was right for them too.

I am dead cool ............ I don't give a shoite
Johnboy is cool ...........he is a shoite specialist
SZK is cool .................cos the Babes love him ( not my fault if he's full of shoite)
Spyderman is cool........'cos he gives everyone shoite
Spyder-stuff ............... is shoite ( even if I have a piece-or-two)

To be honest, I have not been impressed by what I have seen of Spyder stuff. It all seems to be 'critically' seam-sealed as opposed to 'fully' seam-sealed and to be frank if you are going to shell out that sort of money, i.e. hundreds of pounds for non-fake stuff (which I also think is utter madness), I would want the gear to be totally bomb-proof and not half-assed no matter how good it looks.
Stick to TK Maxx is my motto. Last year they did loads of excellent quality women's Rossignol stuff (owned by Quiksilver, so at least reasonably fashionable to the youth of today) that looked a lot better and was significantly cheaper (all less than £100) for gore-tex or equivalent, fully-seam-sealed technical gear.

Spyder is:
Expensive but still looks good even after a few washes.
Warm-Probably has the most expensive and best thermal insulation. Hence the price.
Has styles that are neither at the peak or depths of fashion- You won't look dated on the slopes in 3 years.
Incredibly resistant to abrasion.
Spyder........Reasuuringly expensive!!

cool - i agree letitsnow....those are the reasons i would buy,
so about this critical versus fully seam-sealed. why the fuss? what's the diff and how will it affect me>?
