Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Recco Transponders

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've a £10 voucher for S&R which runs out tomorrow so I thought I'd buy a pack of Recco transponders.

Looks like you get two in a packet.

Should one person wear two transponders or will the pack do for Deb & I?

Also advice please on best place to mount/wear them?

Stick them to a ski boot.

spyderjon, so, just to clarify, rob@rar.org.uk means that you stick one of them on a boot, and another on a different boot. Not both of them on the same boot Wink Very Happy

spyderjon, all previous advice is wrong.
These devices should be surgically inserted into your abdomen, buttocks, or thigh.
Then you won't forget them.

You should have two each - one at each end. ie one on a boot or sewn into the snow gaiter of your sallopettes, and the other up on the upper arm/shoulder

the idea being that whichever way up you end up, there's one at the point nearest the surface.
This is how they came fitted to my kit.

davehk, does the depth of burial make a big difference to how the transponders perform?

don't reccos require a pisteur to search with a detector? It sounds like a great way to find the body after the avalanche. Remember your chances of survival after 40 mins are around 30%. I am no expert but from what I've read unless you are dug out by the people skiing with you, then you are a gonner.

basically yes:-

Amongst the buried victims, 12 (5 alive and 7 dead) were found thanks to their avalanche beacon, 9 by an organised rescue using probes (1 alive, 8 dead), 5 due to dog search (1 alive and 4 dead) and 4 thanks to signs on the surface of the snow (1 alive and 3 dead).

Reccos are passive devices - so they have to receive a signal from the transmitter in the detector and send it back to the receiver. Since the signal strength decreases with the square of the distance, the answer is a big yes!

I would spend your money on something more worth while like renting a transceiver. Having spent time with pisteurs in Espace Killy and Les Arcs the implication is that they are great for finding dead bodies!

In order to use a Recco you need to have the kit and someone who knows how to use it on hand. The detector is not small, and by the time someone gets there with one it could be too late. You are far better using the money to rent a transceiver and learning to use it.

Your best chance of survival is wearing a transceiver (and having it turned on i.e. don't turn it off at lunchtime!), and having the rest of your group know how to use a transceiver and organise a search straight away in the event of an avalanche.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Tigger,

I agree with you and I will. However, a few quid for the Recco's isn't that much to pay for the extra insurance.
