Poster: A snowHead

Having just read the email from Laura, SCGB will remain a Members only Forum. I for one am disappointed that SCGB has been lost although Snowheads has replaced it as a forum I did appreciate the one-stop-shop for snow/resort info. Does Snowheads need to worry about the "Legal implications" referenced inthe email?

For those of you who may not have got it:

Dear Registered User,
We know that many of you have been very disappointed by the Ski Club's
recent decision to remove the Open Chat Forum. We apologise for taking
down the Open Chat Forum without notice, and we do recognise that we
could have done this in a better, more user-friendly way.
We appreciate that the Open Forum provided a good medium for members and
non-members alike to exchange information and clearly there are the
benefits of a community sharing information and making friendships. We
also recognise that it could be a potential source of new members for
the Ski Club.
In view of the strength of the opinions expressed by both members and
non-members, the Club has debated this at its highest level. We have
also taken legal advice.
There are two areas of very real concern to us. Firstly, the legal
liability to which the Ski Club might be exposed by items posted in the
chat forum. There is no way round the legal position that the Club is
technically "publishing" anything that anyone posts in its Chat Forum,
even if we published disclaimers. This isn't just a Ski Club problem -
all chat forums face similar issues.
Secondly, we are concerned about the impact that some of the threads may
have upon the Club's partners, such as rep resorts, and our ability to
go on delivering our wide range of services both at home and abroad to
the Ski Club's 27,500 members.
After very careful consideration of both the benefits and the risks, the
Club feels that we are sadly not in a position to be able to reinstate
the Open Chat Forum, because of the difficulties outlined above. The
Club has decided to retain the Members Chat Forum and invest in
moderation, of which only very little has been done up until now, and we
are installing a new 'report this post' button which members can use to
help in the moderation process. We are reasonably confident that the
Club can moderate a Members Forum, but doubt that we have the resources
to cope with the much larger Open version.
We are aware that some of you may have lost contact with other posters
on the Open Chat Forum, and would like to get in touch. If this is so,
then please email laura.zachary@skiclub.co.uk
<mailto:laura.Zachary@skiclub.co.uk> with the username of the person
that you want to contact, and your note to them. She will then try to
identify the user, and forward your email to them. This will be a
time-consuming, manual process, so please don't expect immediate
results.
We realise that many of you will be disappointed by the decision not to
reinstate the Open Chat Forum. However the Club must take account of the
serious legal issues that have been raised. It's an area of new and
evolving law.
Closing the Open Chat Forum was not a ploy to make loads of new Ski Club
Members, which has been suggested; it was done to protect the Club and
its relationships. You may like to know that the Ski Club of Great
Britain is run on a not-for-profit basis, which means that any profits
made are re-invested into the Club for the benefit of the members.
Of course we do hope that you decide to join the Club, not just to use
the Members Chat Forum, but because of the numerous benefits that are
available to Ski Club members. Click here to see what the Club can offer
you: www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/theskiclub/skiclubandyou.asp

Yours,
Ski Club of Great Britain

Bit big that - sorry
Anyway - maybe it's a good thing. All this waiting for a decision is now over and we can get on with our lives.
I was never a member but I feel myself sort of agreeing that they had some valid points about litegation and all the bitching that was going on.
Some people have suggested that the SCGB should have put a link the snowHeads for the expelled non members, but they cannot realistically be expected to do that until we stop bitching about them and get on with being a snow sport community instead of a SCGB bashing community. I wouldn't link to a site that was saying bad things about me either - just common sense.

Brian Barrett,
On the SCGB bashing front.
It's only to be expected that they were going to get a bit of flack around here. Just look how bad it was on their own forum: and that was the people who DIDN'T get kicked out!!
I've said all along that I have a great respect for SCGB but people have had every reason to moan. This will subside, it already has to a great degree.
Personally, I have made effort during these weeks to connect with SCGB in the hope that together, we could produce a positive outcome for all. They have not proved to be particularly enthusiastic to engage in any way.
Frankly, the way SCGB has behaved throughout this whole afair has, in my opinion, done more to strengthen its image as an exclusive and elitist organisation than anything else in the last 10 years.
Yes, they have every justification for what they've done but they have done themselves no favours by the way in which they executed each step of the process.
It's not what U does it's the that U does it - oooooooooh- yeeeeeeeeaaaah!

Why would I want to join when I can get all the info I need here?
Incidently we'll probably all get that email, I certainly got it then 2 minutes later and email from laura which said:"Please may I apologise by sending you the last email addressed to: 'Dear
Ski Club Member'. The content was very similar to this email but it was
directed at Ski Club members rather than non-members. The email below
applies to you more. (Laura Zachary)"

Well personally I think that's just fine by me! A lot of goodwill had been destroyed by the SCGB's original decision & if there were 2 forums to post to, my work may well have suffered (not of course that it is now, for the benefit of any co-employees...). I'm quite happy here, putting pen to my fine limericks

I was planning a final post on SCGB but I'm not sure there's much point. I think I'd like to echo U's comments above...

Nobody there to hear it anyway from what I gather.
I guess one of the members could get their butler to read it to them.
Sorry I'm bitching again - and I was the one saying live and let live.

Brian. I've been an SCGB member since 1962, but am still saving for a butler.

One problem I noticed with the SCGB forum was that the user interface was clunky and this made linking a chore. I never did get the hang of how to post a link from a new topic post. I noticed that a lot of people would cut-and-paste stuff of other websites, newspapers etc rather than linking (not Mr Goldsmith who was and remains an expert at posting links).
I can imagine this would have worried the Ski Club. Anyway it is worth remembering that, except for Mr Orf's web site, you shouldn't cut and paste stuff like newspaper articles to Snowheads but should link instead. That way we won't have some of the worries the SC forum had.

Well, I heard about the closure yesterday. You see, I was talking to one of my wife's friend's servant's tennis partners. Apparently she heard of it while replacing divots in-between the chukkas of a polo match being held at Windsor Gt. Park last Sunday.
I'm really hacked off about it! I think I'll let of steam by beating some of the servants!

So will the SCGB be putting a link to here on their site then as a service to members who wish to keep in touch with the views of us exiles?

I must say that I am dismayed by what I'm reading on the 'other site' and the email. Seems the SCGB is cowered by legal advice (Sir G. considers this advice likely to be 'drivel') and daren't do anything at all regards an open forum and that seems to include any mention of us, let alone a link.

Glad it's all over. The legal stuff in my opinion was just a smokescreen. They just did not want the open forum as it probably was not consistent with the exclusive image that they like to portray. There are loads chat forums who don't seem to suffer the same legal problems.
Forget it and move on.

It doesn't matter, I'm a member and I don't go on it much if at all, everyones here, so why go back?

I would tend to agree with you there, Phil Prior, I also think the legal arguement was a feeble excuse.
When one considers how quickly the forum grew in a little over a year from scratch, the SCGB must be mad to have taken this course. As I posted earlier...Last one out, switch off the lights.....!
And party on

I posted my last message there on Saturday, and certainly won't be going back. So bored with the circular arguments with the pin-headed Council apologists.
I've come to the conclusion that the SCGB does not want people like me, so I'm quite happy to let my membership lapse (though fortunately not until after the next AGM and Council elections ).

On the legal issue I can't see the difference between the ramifications for web-based forums and Usenet. Both are in the public domain. Indeed on usenet most forums aren't even moderated so people post all sorts of insulting stuff. The chat here is extremely mild in comparison! I've only recently joined Snowheads, and previously contributed only to Usenet, but at least here regular infringers of the rules can be 'struck off', far more easily than in Usenet newsgroups....

Posting links to newspaper articles could be a problem.
Last week we were notified by our Chamber of Commerce, of the newspaper equivelant of the PPRS who are phoning companies, asking them if they are putting articles from newspapers on their notice boards and then hitting them with legal action for infringement of copywrite.
Aparantley this is all above board (but decidedly underhand) and companies caught out have been hit for fines in the region of £1700.00.
I am at home at the moment but if anyone wants more info on this I will post the details tomorrow.
As I am off to Breckenridge on Weds I wont be able to respond after that until the 9th March.
Please excuse the spelling, this was never my strong point.

Alastair Pink, since we seem to have a number of boarders trying to convert our more susceptible brethren to the darkside, perhaps you should start a thread on converting us to freeheeling?
Perhaps it'll be the new blading? But with respect!
