Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just back from Obergurgl

I've just got back from a week in Obergurgl....how were the conditions?

Well, it was fairly warm all week with a lot of sun and a couple of days snow. Above 2500m conditions were very good...firm pistes in the afternoon and softening into the afternoon....we even got some fresh powder off piste on Friday! The slopes in Obergurgl were not nearly as good as the neigbouring Hochgurgl, as a result though it was much more crowded over there (still not bad though.) In obergurgl, it was quite icy in the mornings, good late morning and then very slushy as the day progressed. The pistes in Hochgurgl were very good, with a firm base and powder on top. It looks as though this week is going to be fairly similar to last week, however, on the obergurgl website they are forecasting much lower temps. on friday and into the weekend with heavy snow.

So....if anyone is heading out there next week, i would say that you will probably get some very good late season conditions! snowHead

To be honest, I was disapointed with Obergurgl, we had great conditions and that maybe masked the fact that I felt it was a dull resort. The area to the extreme right through the trees was good but it was only about 2400m down to 2000m so not extensive. The blues were mainly windy narrow roads and not the wide open motorways that I'd promised my wife. These runs were not steep but too narrow to practise on and the piste maps are misleading in this respect.

We went to Obertaurn the previous year and despite only having a 500m vertical, we felt it was a much more varied resort.

Yeah i would agree with you on much of what you say up4it. There is not a great deal of variety of slopes and it is not necessarily ideal for beginners or experts for that matter. We tended to stay over in Hochgurgl whilst we were there, not only because the snow was better, but we felt there was more variety over there, and more choice of runs. There were also many off-piste opportunities and we actually did a lot of off piste, as there was fresh powder on a couple of days.

We also went to Obertauern the previous year, and i would probably agree with you that there was more variety there than in Obergurgl-although still not a great deal. Next year i think we will be heading for a larger resort with more choice and variety of skiing (and nightlife) such as St.Anton.
