Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

This poster from the Swiss resort of Flims-Laax-Falera is the best I've seen for a long time.
Who says the Swiss don't have a sense of humour? By the way, if you've not skied Flims-Laax, give it serious consideration. It's persistently ignored by the mainstream tour operators but has some of the finest intermediate skiing in the Alps, across a vast and sometimes very beautiful mountainscape. Best to ski it mid-winter, as it's lovely and sunny and therefore tends to thaw early.

It may work for some because your browser has cached the image. If you cleared your cache you would probably find you could no longer get through.

Thanks DB. I should explain that I borrowed the photo from DB (Dangerous Brian), who lives in Vienna and has a talent for spotting amusing things on the internet. He is also well placed for spotting some of the world's finest cakes, which are a speciality of Vienna.

I can't tell you why Hannibal crossed the Alps, other than to give the Romans a bit of a well deserved duffing-up, but I can tell you where he crossed the Alps. He went over the Piccolo San Bernadino pass. Which close when it gets snowed up in Oct and doesn't open again until at least the next May. It does happen to provide super skiing now and the natives are much friendlier than they were in Hannibal's day.

Unless he crossed at the Col de Montgenvre - which is what Livy seems to suggest and a number of modern historians support this view amongst other possibilities.

Interestingly the second classical account of the Punic Wars by Polybius refers to the tribe near the pass greeting Hannibal with branches and wreaths so it doesn't sound like they were that unfriendly either... or maybe they offered you a bottle of Piat d'Or?

Smile

From the accounts that I have read, most of the elephants died on the journey, and those that were still alive were so exhausted, they could not be used in battle.

The image of elephants in a battle is still one I find difficult to visualise.

I'm no expert (but what the hell!), but my understanding of elephants in battle was that in practical terms they weren't particularly effective in battle - but they scared the bejesus out of the opposition!

When I was in Val Cenis they claimed that Hannibal had come through there (my alpine geography is not so hot though).

Yes, but those things were significantly larger than your average African/Indian elephant. I think Hannibal would have had difficulty putting 20 archers on the back of your average "Nellie". I accept that the site of an elephant to somebody on the battlefield who had never seen one before would be unnerving. The ancient equivalent of a tank I suppose Question

A rather deranged tank which was as much a risk to its rider and fellow soldiers as the opposition Mr. Green
