Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I had a walk up Y-Garn to have a look at Banana Gully today. Inspired by Scarpa and Kuba, I've been tempted for a year or two but have not had chance to have a look. Anyway, looks good.... I can post photo's if anyone is interested.

Otherwise Kuba has posted some photo's and video from his descent this year, here:

30th April 2016. Snowdonia.

A cold week with snow on the hills had me watching the web cams, hoping to score some late season English or Welsh skiing. The Lakes looked doable but I was keen to try my luck again in Snowdonia. Plan A was to repeat February's line but Mark, my local contact suggested heading up from the A5 side and the Y-Gran web cam looked promising.

^^ I parked up on the A5, above the Llyn Ogwyn close to 'Glan Dena'. As luck would have it I hooked up with Mark and Shân and we boot packed up up from the road on the path up to to Bryn Mawr. The snowline started at around 500m. Here's Shân with Y-Garn in the back ground.

^^ Our target were the smooth looking lines and the Carneddau ridge.

^^ Skins went when we reached the lake. Bwlch yr Ole Wen, towering above the lake offers some steep skiing when in condition.

^^ The weather was a little mixed with showers passing through and sunny intervals. Tryfan looking moody.

^^ Snow became easier as we gained altitude and found some nice snow filled runnels.

^^ The ridge revealed views towards Anglesey and the coast.

^^ and more of the Carnedd range. Opportunities galore.

^^ After a traverse across the ridge we regained the ridge and skied the line we skinned up. The snow was a little warm which made things 'interesting', but good fun. We skied about 1000m or so, descending maybe 300m. Missey the spaniel was loving it.

^^ As we lost altitude the snow got thinner and softer.

^^ Until we were rock hopping.

^^ Temps has risen and the weather was much more Spring like as we walked out.

Another fantastic day ski touring in Snowdonia. Thanks to Mark and Shân for good company and sharing their local Snowdonia Navigation skills. Looking forward to next Winter. There is a lot to do... snowHead

Could be that this year Snowdonia holds the last snow south of the highlands. More usually it is Brown Cove near Helvellyn, except in big easterly winters when Cross fell in the Pennines holds the last patches. these have been as late as the end of August !

The final snow south of the big Scottish mountains reportedly melted over the weekend. This was at Y Ffoes Ddyfn on Carnedd Llewellyn in northern Snowdonia.

Winter returns to Snowdonia and I hook up with Emma and Kuba and head to the Carneddau. The route was pretty much as the report above but with noticeably more snow.

^^ Bootpack up to around 550m

^^ Skin to the ridgeline

^^ Carnedd Llewelyn in the background, loaded, probably in a good way...

4 Days of Ski Touring in Shropshire.

Friday:

^^ A last minute decision to ski up the local hill (The Wrekin) by head torch. The main track has been the victim of 4x4s so I headed up through the Beech woods. The down was 'OK' with more gravel when would have been ideal. However the few turns back through the woods give a hint of what could be..

Saturday:

^^ A late start and drive over to Caer Caradoc for a skin up to below the Hill Fort earth works. A surprising amount of wind blown snow but a little humid making the ski down, interesting.

^^ Looking back to the Little Caradoc, The Lawley and The Wrekin in the very far distance.

Sunday

Heavy snow overnight on Saturday continued through Sunday. By lunchtime the roads looked a little better so I headed back to the Wrekin.

Cold powder on the way up through the trees with lots of skiers and boarders on the main track, which had been pisted by the walkers. The ski down was excellent...

^^ But I couldn't resists ducking back into the trees on the steeper pitch. Shropshire tree skiing of a fashion Smile

Monday to follow.

Monday. Powder day.

^^ I hooked up with Emma and we decided on a return to Caer Caradoc.

^^ It's an old hill fort topping out at 450m.

^^ Lots of snow transport over the shoulder. We dropped off the back on the lee side but the snow was heavy and blown. Plan B was to boot pack to the top of Little Caradoc which revealed a tempting steeper line with a North Westerly aspect.

^^ Perfect. Powder while dodging gorse bushes.

^^ Our lines visible from the A49.

^^ Emma bailed but I couldn't resist a skin up to the Lawley. Dropping off the top turned up the run of the day. Alpine.

^^ Not bad for Shropshire...
