Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Do I need fat skis for Vallee Blanche classic route in April

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi Everyone. I am hoping to ski the Vallee Blanche in mid April. This is part of a short 3-day ski trip to Chamonix. I am alone so too expensive to hire a guide - I will need to join a group. This means I will probably be going on the classic route which is fine by me. Never done VB before.

I own a pair of Volkl RTM84 skis, 176 long, which I love. These are mostly frontside skis but they are quite versatile, 84 cm under foot and do give me a bit of float. My question is will they be good enough for the VB or should I hire fat skis. I understand that in April the chances of powder on a route skied so many times in the season are slim, but I would appreciate to hear other people's views.

PS - I would also appreciate recommendations as to which outfit has regular groups that I could join. I see ESF offers it at 85 Euro but there must be also other options.

@Sgebay, the RTMs will be fine for the classic route if you are a half decent skier. You can always hire something fatter the day before if it looks like it is going to be ridiculously deep.

ESF is as good as any for a group I would have thought, especially on the route you would like to go on.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

The skis will be fine. You will be lucky to get some powder, maybe some tomorrow! 85 euros is at the bottom of the going rate. Save some energy for carrying them up the steps. You may feel wonky at the top of the midi but it will pass as soon as you lose some height.
