Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Torn ACL - Next Steps With NHS or Private

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I had surgery with a very well regarded sports knee injury specialist who was adamant that no surgery was the fast track to a knackered knee down the line and not doing what I enjoy in the future!

He also was very clear that skiing within 12 months was asking for a fresh rupture. Let alone my other hobbies of squash, running and badminton. 12 months of purgatory down.

My NHS doc looked at me (reasonably fit and healthy 40 year old) and said "well, if you don't lead an active lifestyle you dont need it fixing". I went back to the surgeon at that point who had fixed my other knee 2 years earlier and was done and dusted before the NHS offered me a physio appointment to keep me tickign over...

@imull, "He also was very clear that skiing within 12 months was asking for a fresh rupture."

Hmmm.

Not what my surgeon thinks. He does quite a few ACLs. Every day. I'm not going to be signed off for World Cup Moguls this season but 24-25? for sure.

My physio is a rugby league superleage physio who got me in with my surgeon. He's a top drawer surgeon who's waiting room is generally full of players from the top couple of leagues. Great for people spotting, crap for your bank balance.

Both the surgeon and my physio were absolutely adamant that the earlier you return to sport the greater the reinjury rate and that 9-12 months period was particularly risky. Their absolute guidance was not to go back to playing badminton, squash, football (where I injured it) or skiing within 12 months. I put in a shed load of work on the rehab work and spent hundreds of hours doing squats etc so could probably have gone back earlier but why risk it when those who know say not to. Also, being in for another £10k or so because I was impatient didn't seem sensible.

From a very quick google, here's one study that seems to back this up. Fig 2 shows the reinjury rate for early returners vs those who wait until fully healed. https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/50/13/804 At the end of the day, everyone is different and everyone's guidance is a little different. Given the credentials of the two I was lucky to be able to work with, I wasn't going to go against it. Absolutely nothing to do with what the missus would say if I did reinjure myself Laughing

@imull, probably requires more nuance than on a phone.

My expectations are a winter of very pedestrian skiing - may have to buy piste skis Shocked but defo rando is fine. And defo skiing after 9 months.

My surgeon (who treats various local ice hockey teams - Annecy, etc) thinks 8-12 months for return to competitive sport. So arguably not so different from your barber.)

(My physio ran a 100km trail 12 weeks after her second knee Shocked Shocked ) so yes, everyone’s different but I’m totally going to be skiing in December.

@Gremlin,

At the risk of getting shot down for marketing i run a day for returning skiers after injury or surgery.
A number on here have attended.

However for the the sake of impartiality.

I see a big obstacle to returning to skiing after injury or surgery is in the head.
It’s an “all committing” sport. In fact being tentative or fearful is a risk in itself for injury.
Please don’t feel obliged to attend with me but here i outline the elements of what i do so you can arrange yourself
Do at least do the following:

Get you surgeon to sign you off.
See a physio who is prepared to sign you off as strong enough.
Use an instructor who understands that you have been injured and are recovering/recovered.
Somewhere like an indoor place is great (that’s what we do)
If you first time is going to be in the resort book a lesson for yourself without the family and friends so all the focus and attention is on you.

Hope that helps and that you have a nervous first day but brilliance for the rest of the trip.

@Jonathan Bell, as ever great advice Happy

Week before last, my physio had me do a box jump. Quite extraordinary. I almost couldn't do it. Mind-body at complete conflict. Very odd. (I managed it with some encouragement).
