Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Yesterday had a very nice day in Kamui. It was a stunning bluebird day: https://www.instagram.com/p/C2LkhOQyOhf/?igsh=czd0bWExbTRjdzlv

We warmed up on the pistes which were as good as it gets and then played in the powder fields on the front side and in the trees below the gondola: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C2LjnrUyDL0/?igsh=ZHE2cmIyeGx6OWw1

After my first Katsu of the trip we headed over to the backside, the snow was nice but quite tracked. Trees more open than Furano but less vertical to play in unless you are touring. Nice little ski hill and worth the trip in good snow, it was very quiet

About 2.5 hours for 1100m of vert. We stopped at 1400m as the skinning gets more technical as it gets wind blasted above the forest and my buddies were starting to suffer. I guess another hour to hour and a half to the top at 1900m. Beautiful mountain snowHead

Packed a bit in yesterday, we are now in Otaru and started the day with a nice dip in the pacific to warm the cockles wink https://www.instagram.com/p/C2OPlomvvyl/?igsh=MXI2N2hqcGliZnIxYw==

We then cruised around Sapporo Kokusai which was quite busy and after a big bowl of curry ramen headed off for some night skiing at Tenguyama https://www.instagram.com/p/C2PBuF7rSco/?igsh=MTVwcWcwNGJyb2tqZA==

Really sweet little hill with great views of the City which managed to disappear just as I got my phone out.

The snow started to fall quite heavily and we finished with a great line where it had filled in the trees with just enough light not to ski totally blind. Cracking day snowHead

Good work and a lovely photo. It’s such a perfectly formed volcano, and (when you have a clear day) draws the eye from Niseko in the same way the Matterhorn draws the eye from everywhere in Zermatt.

Friday saw our return to Kiroro. On my previous trip 9 years ago it was the only place that delivered for us and we had two great days there with literally no one around. The ramens lived in the memory too. The forecast was a modest 9cm but as we drove closer to the resort it became pretty clear we were in for something special and it had properly dumped. It was that rarest of things in Hokkaido, a stunning bluebird powder day. Quite a few other people had the same idea but for our warm up lap we headed up the chair whilst everyone else hit the gondola. As we headed up we saw the piste off the chair was virtually untracked. Instructions from the guide were ‘don’t stop’ and it was full send down the piste with 25cm of fluff on the top, my new favourite warm up run snowHead

We then did another warm up lap in the trees, bit branchy but great fun https://www.instagram.com/reel/C2UivGrLDbg/?igsh=MzJ5cXllcnk2NjIy

Then we went searching for lines and found some crackers with a short bootpack which we just did on repeat, luckily no one else discovered it: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C2V0Z8dSEGd/?igsh=MWZtaDU3ajBqNmtidg==

I then discovered @BobinCH, was in the resort. They say you should never meet your heroes and as it turned out I didn’t! I waited patiently after I finished skiing wearing a pink carnation but he was having so much fun he binned me off to do another lap and we never caught up. Can’t say I blame him tbh it was freaking awesome Laughing

It was an amazing day at my favourite resort in Hokkaido, so many possibilities, love it snowHead

@BobinCH, Rusutsu is a good call on those windy days as the skiing in the gullys is in deep wind-shadows.

I saw a group of three snowboarders get flipped onto their backs without warning by a gust of wind there while going along a piste on the windy ridge.

Also I had the best chips I've ever had in my life in the self-serve there...something about those Hokkaido potatoes.

Thanks mate! Up in Furano now in the middle of the mother of all storms!!! Think it could be an Onsen day today looking at the SnowJapan report this morning…

Furano is in the midst of an extreme snow storm at the moment. Extremely strong winds are blowing around base area and it is snowing heavily. The snow is coming in sideways and visibility is limited even around the village. It is a mild -3c and the high will go to +2c. The forecast is for snow to continue through the day. 42cm of new snow has accumulated noting that this is strongly wind affected and will be more and less in places. The resort has not put out a report of lift operation at the time of writing this report - you will need check with resort directly for latest information.

@BobinCH, Rusutsu will be deeep if the wind/snowfall has been similar there.
Have a look at the piste maps...there are a series of ridges (they will be windscoured) with valleys and gulleys between them that are in the wind shadow and will get loaded.

It's not the steepest but it is really good and also really weird with a frozen theme park outside and a huge resort hotel with a theme park inside...most odd!

Tomamu today was fun. Snow was still chucking down when parking. Some small hikes and loads of knee deep tracks.

I loved it. In the main the lifts follow the ridges so you can scope the trees for wider spacings and freshies on the uplift. Pretty much imposible to get into any flat spots or trouble apart from one gully which is pretty clearly marked/roped off. There's some interesting features hidden away, one epic natural seriously banked halfpipe hiding in the trees which was an absolute hoot.

Finished our road trip on a high last week in Sapporo Teine. What a place! If you haven’t been put it on your list. It was absolutely pounding when we arrived last Saturday. A few people around but no one seemed that interested in going in the trees. My knee was in bits but sucked it up for one last morning of deep blower powder. The highlight had to be the chutes from the old abandoned lift station at the top of the resort. The most civilized access you’ll ever find to some of the best terrain we found on our trip. There is gate at the top of the mountain and it’s not even a boot pack, just a gentle walk along a snow covered road and then take your pick. The chute directly under the old station was amazing, 40+ degrees and absolutely loaded with snow, face shots all the way down and no one on it. We kept doing it on repeat the rest of the morning. It was the closest we found to alpine style/north American terrain with the cherry on top of Hokkaido’s finest snow. It was 9 years between my two trips to Japan and not going to let that happen again so we’ve booked next year. Big shout out to www.hokkaidovibe.com for top guiding and great company snowHead
