Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Deacon 80 or 84 sizing

Can anyone provide insight into how the length of the Volkl Deacons is measured in comparison to other brands? Do they seem comparatively longer or shorter within their category of skis? I've heard mention of some tip and tail rocker being incorporated.

At the moment, I'm skiing an Atomic X9 WB 174 cm, 74mm width, 16m radius).

I’m 182cm, fairly light 74kg, skiing level 7 on a scale 1-10 (1 = beginner 10 = expert)
What’s the recommendation for Deacons?

My brother in law is slightly shorter and maybe 10 kg heavier than you. He's on the 177 80s. It's the right length for him. Similar ability level.

84 is a stiffer ski.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'm about 10cm shorter than you but not much lighter. I have a pair of Deacon 80s in 167 for when piste conditions are not "perfect" for me (fast carving on hardpack).

I find the Deacons excellent and very forgiving when skiing typical mixed scrappy slushy spring snow, when my race carvers would be hard work. You may want to try a pair in 172?

I have the Deacon 84 in 172. I'm 177cm and around 71kg and was skiing a 160 slalom ski before.

I find them to be a great all round ski, especially good in softer, bumpier conditions and much more forgiving than the shorter race skis I've been using for the past 20 years. They get a bit squirrelly straight running on icy/hard pistes, and are obviously pretty slow edge-to-edge compared to a slalom ski, but it's worth it for the ease of use in the variable terrain.

I'd probably suggest 172 or 177 - best if you can try them or a similar "all mountain" ski first.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

What's your experience with the quite unique 3D radius concept of the Deacons in practice?
Are there differences between the 3D radius and the single radius concept?
