Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Sorry - hyperactive this morning - SUNSCREEN

Ram80’s post regarding a hospital visit for sunburn when a youth made me think of this….

Cody T’s favourite sunscreen is this:

https://xtremepharmacy.co.uk/products/piz-buin-spf30-glacier-cream

And no surprise. It is our favourite too.

Grom2 used to react horribly to regular sunscreens - Boots, Nivea etc - and I think it is the benzoate elements which drove his redness and dryness. It’s basically horrible stuff. But with this ancient formulation there’s no reaction and absolutely no burning either. Brilliant stuff.

It still has benzoates in it

https://whatsinmyjar.com/product/piz-buin-glacier-cream-high-spf30

But maybe the formulation and thicker medium means that they are absorbed less…?

It converted me…I used to use the climbers’ ‘I’m too hard for sunscreen’ nonsense. Until I knew a number of people with melanoma….

And your slather of choice is……?

Ultrasun Extreme 50+ (also have the “face” version). Costs a small fortune, but not as greasy as some other brands (but still a bit greasy). Previous fave was Boots Once SPF 50, but I have some in the cabinet from my last visit, and it's much slimier than the Ultrasun.

I work with these guys - https://lifejacketskin.com I find the gel really good and isn't sticky, can rock climb in it straight after applying it.

I carry this - https://lifejacketskin.com/products/mineral-sun-stick?variant=44454377521458 when touring, find it the right size and weight plus very easy to apply on the go, its quite thick and stays on for ages.

We like La Roche Posay Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Crème Solaire Visage en Gel-Crème

https://www.laroche-posay.fr/gammes/solaires/anthelios/anthelios-uvmune-400-creme-solaire-visage-en-gel-creme-sans-parfum/LRP_162.html

Seems to work, easily absorbed, not greasy ...

Also a Piz Buin user, it's the only one I've tried that doesn't make me feel like a disgusting greasy mess. And it actually works, resists rubbing and washing off too. Very good stuff.

Never thought there was much difference between different sunscreens but I am here to learn!

We use Nivea I think.

Whatever's left in the cupboard from last summer, normally an F30 or F50, and isn't too congealed, so I don't get rinsed having to buy it last minute at the airport.
Normally a Lidl own brand... I'm dead classy.

Same, brill in winter, goes on nicely, does the job (I'm pasty Irish, it needs to be good!).

In summer, I switch to the LRP Anthelios sprays - the face one is also quite cooling. I always carry it on hot days for easy top ups, and a bit of refreshment.

I got this for summer hockey, expensive but the least greasy one I've ever found, sweat resistant and uses a tiny amount ( I paid £30, seems even more expensive now!)

Skinnies (works fine with a pea sized blob for the face) https://amzn.to/49UXcvi

I had some rosacea and other issues, the dermatologist recommended this for the face, which is also non greasy IMHO.

I usually go for one of the Manbi ones that combine a small tube of sun cream with a lip balm thing in the cap, as it's one less thing to forget Smile

Never managed to run out of suncream before lip balm though.

I like this stuff from Decathalon. Absorbent, high factor and you don't look like Ronald McDonald with it. Definitely works, no burning.

https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/spf50-sport-sun-protection-cream-50-ml/_/R-p-142883?mc=8355417

Also doesn't cost the earth like some brands.

What "they say" over here is: we're not using nearly enough of it, no matter the brand. Apparently you need to really slather it on. I like sprays although we'll probably learn that inhaling it is deadly....

We use the ALDI own brand "Once" SPF 30, and top it up during the day if needed. I am one of those that got a malignant melanoma, probably contributed to by sun exposure when I was young and "suncream" was more about helping you tan than protecting skin!

+1. This works for sailing, which is a far tougher test of suncream than skiing (at least if you are sailing a small, high performance dinghy).
