Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Where to go skiing this Saturday 9th - Help Needed

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

I am in the unfortunate position of having to take a weeks holiday from Sat 9th onwards and want a quick get away for some pre season snow. Now I've read all the posts here and know things are not so great, but if I am to go anywhere where should it be. I'll be travelling alone and looking for a very last minute deal (probably book Friday). There some 99 deals to L2A and LDA but i'm happy to pay a bit more for more snow.

Now some advice from resort or anyone else heading off the weekend would be much appreciated. Oh and if anyone wants to come along the invite is open. I'll be travelling from gatwick.

Regards,

Carl

mrlossyman, in the alps, somewhere with plenty of skiing above 2000m. Based on current forecasts, I'd go to Zermatt and your timing may be pretty much spot on snowHead

If you've got the money and inclination then the US/Canada seem to be having a great early season.

Midwest US and West Canada have by far the best snow. Obergurgl, Zermatt and Hintertux have reasonable conditions right now. Wherever you go in the Alps, best take some Persil to wash out the mud stains when you get back from the slopes wink

Don't listen to the merchants of doom. If you go to Zermatt expect at least a couple of feet of fresh snow above 2000m by the weekend and at least some snow down in the town.

nondescript, Nooooooo not Tignes whatever you do! Virtually the population of Spain arrives this week-end (as they do every year) to partake in their fave sports... queuing and smoking. To be avoided this year at all costs due to the conditions elsewhere in the area.

Hintertux looks a better bet mrlossyman (and it had better be cos I'm there from sunday night). www.tux.at - fly to Munich, 2 hours by hire car.

Hi, thanks for the replies so far. I should have perhaps said I'd like to stay in Europe. Oh, a resort where I may actually see some fellow brits maybe good as i will be travelling alone.

Great replies so far. Madeye-Smiley

mrlossyman, Bode Swiller may be correct. If only the glacier is open at Tignes, (as it was on the opening weekend Nov 25th) the pistes get VERY busy (we queued for over 45 minutes for a drag lift). However if more of the espace Killy is open (as looks quite likely from the forecasts, both for snow and cold temps, they have a LOT of snow cannon) then the pressure on the top runs will be less. Tignes/Val D will meet your 'fellow brits' requirement for certain. Can't comment on Hintertux, but have skied at L2A and have to say there is more choice of runs on the Grand Motte than the L2A glacier. Enjoyed L2A as a resort though, and again plenty of chance to meet fellow brits.

Zermatt: http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Zermatt.0to3mid.shtml

As Zermatt is at altitude when the snow does fall it will stay around if it warms up a bit.
Even if none of the forecast snow were to fall, they still have around 40k of pistes open.

looking more and more like Zermatt is a safe option. All I nned to do now is find a holiday. What's the apres ski like there? Is it likely to be lively this time of year. Thanks for all your help...

AxsMan, from experience, if the Solaise webcam is looking like that in Val d'Isere, the skiing there is going to be pretty crappy. There may be full cover at the top, but there'll be loads of stones and rocks.

mrlossyman, I would suggest that if you can, go to North America.

I'm in the same situation to you, and have booked a week in Whistler. The jet lag is going to be pretty bad, but it'll be worth it to get some quality skiing in.

Kramer, I'm not out in Val for another two weeks so there's still time. Enjoy Whistler though, our trip to the Sates last year (Heavenly) was the best skiing I've ever had. Jet lag is a plus, up early, get first dibs on the snow, and cheap evenings 'cause you're asleep by 8.00 Very Happy (it's coming back that's the killer Sad )

Kramer, actually that cam is just off the bottom of the glacier and does go brown in the summer. It's at almost 3000m though and they did fill in the bottom a few weeks ago with artificial snow so they could run the furggsattel chair.

Snowing down to the town in Zermatt now.

Edit: although if I had the time and cash I'd be off to whistler too ....

Frosty the Snowman, the keeper of the Zoo (small variety) was exceptionally helpful, and following his advice I'm getting a rental spec pair from Telemark Pyrenees, should be arriving tomorrow, fingers crossed. Very Happy

My next pair of boots is definitely going to coincide with a trip to Chamonix. Very Happy

mrlossyman, I read on another thread that Ischgl has about 60km open, so that would probably be the largest ski area open so far.
