Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Voluntary ban on weather speculation?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Is it time for a voluntary moratorium on all the "woe is me - there is no snow yet" threads? I'm sure it isn't cheering anyone up (except anyone going to Western Canada or the Pacific Northwest wink ). Carry on griping if you like but it won't bring it any faster.

Remember in the days before the internet all people had to go on were a tiny snow depth table in the weekend papers and then wait to excitedly ask the transfer rep (remember this was also pre DIY trips generally) "so is there any snow?" Was everyone any less happy?

I think I've now officially become my father harking back to the good old days wink

It's healthy for folks to get in touch with their inner feelings and important that they feel comfortable expressing those thoughts and fears to the rest of the group wink . fatbob, I hate to say this publically but you're in denial and, out of all of us, you're the one displaying the most outward symptoms of snow-loss-induced-mental-excrement, or SLIME, as we professionals prefer to call it. Get some help fella. In fact, we're all here to help you. Please check in with us every hour just so we can make sure you haven't done anything silly.

Problem we have tho FatBoB is that half the people speculating think they are 'forecasting'.
Maybe we should have a 'cowdoo' rating for posts?

OK you all win - I can't save you from yourselves. Sad Just don't come running to me when it actually does start puking big time. Then the questions will be "do I need snowtyres?", "how do I get chains with my car?", "We got stuck in a drift getting to the resort - can't they do something about the snow?" wink

Can we stop the met office doing their endless speculation? This one was published in the last 24 hours Puzzled

Forecast for Winter 2006/7
Temperature
As in last month's forecast, probabilities weakly favour temperatures warmer than 1971-2000 averages over much of western and central Europe. However, there has been a return to a finely balanced situation over northern Europe where the influence of El Niño may encourage cold outbreaks during mid to late winter; at times such outbreaks can be expected to affect parts of the UK.

For the UK, December is expected to continue mild in most regions. Near average or warmer-than-average temperatures are the more likely outcomes for the winter period as a whole with the potential for lower temperatures (relative to average) in mid to late winter.

Precipitation
Signals for precipitation from our forecasting methods are mixed over Europe, and in most regions there is no clear indication for either above or below normal.

For the UK, above-average rainfall is likely to continue through much of December, and best estimates slightly favour average or above-average precipitation for the winter as a whole. Shocked

I love that met office report, basically covers all angles so they are right whatever happens!! eg these 2 classic phrases:

"there is no clear indication for either above or below normal. "

"best estimates slightly favour average or above-average precipitation for the winter as a whole"

They also give the figures that those words are attempting to describe. Maybe they should just stick with the figures.

kitenski, I think the language of the Met Office forecast is actually quite helpful, in that it it indicates clearly the degree of uncertainty and enables you to make a judgement - for example that it is improbable that it will be a very dry winter. Sometimes the data are such that the models simply cannot come up with a firm sounding forecast - and you can't blame the Met Office for that. What I do find annoying is when the data are not pointing in any clear direction but we nonetheless get a certain-sounding forecast. That was happening with the marine forecasts during mid November when I was sailing, and is extremely annoying. If the Met Office tell you there will be winds blowing Severe Gale Force 9 in the following 24 hours your response, in terms of planning, is not the same as if they told you there was a slight possibility of Gale Force 9. I don't have any problem with forecasts which are carefully worded to give me no baseless confidence!

And the classic response is always "It was snowing hard when I left" and the resulting disappointment when you finally get up there and find virtually nothing is devastating! At least with webcams you can see before you arrive so it's less of a shock...off to view the Les Arc cams next....not that I'm a compulsive cam viewer... wink

snowangel., I think we are talking about forecasting on this thread although other threads are snow ramping.

It is snowing in the Alps and elsewhere, and Snowheads are talking about it and the webcams are showing it, I don't see a problem with that.

I'm much worse. I've actually e-mailed Chamonet pleading with them to tell me it is going to snow before 15th December (having seen nothing but rocks on Brevant webcam.)

They were very sweet and told me that the lift company were under a lot of pressure to open but wisely didn't tell me it was going to snow!
