snow plough injury!

I have been skiing a lot with my 4 yr old daughter, at snow plough & have somehow injured both 2nd toes (next to big toe). I can't carve with her because she copies me - only without turning, skis straight down slope rolling eyes both toes are agony - has anyone else done this? is it my boots? (old, need zipfits) or technique?- anyone know any exercises to make it go away?

Are you standing too upright - try flexing a bit more, that will pull your toes back from the ends of the toe box.

The other (slight) possibility is that your feet are bigger at the start of the season than they will be at the end (more fat, less muscle now) - at least I think that was what SZK once told me...

rpft, Are you rhips far enough forward. Any toe injusry would suggest you are leaning back a little. If you refine your plough so that your hips are right over the balls of your feet it may get better (you'll also get extra braking). Very Happy BTW it's not your toenail is it? I can't have any growth when wearing my skiboots (just a thought.)

Wear The Fox Hat, I am really careful about not standing upright, because this is a real weakness for me & I don't want to pass it on to her & although I ski 3+ times a week c.5 hours, I am a bit lardier than in the summer. Your flexing comment rings some bells too, because I know I don't move my upper body much & I think you should at snow plough.

easiski, Toenails are ok, but will try the hip thing def. I was advised recently to flex my knees & rest my hands just underneath my knees. I think it is good for your skiing to go back to this, but I just want to walk normally again! Smile

rpft, a couple of drills that may help. first try to plow with your holding both poles together horizontal in front of you in a position like you are carrying a tray of drinks

second one is to put poles directly behind you knees but make sure your palms are facing down the hill and keep eyes up and body extended upwards without poles creeping up the backs of your thighs.

skimottaret, Firstly I should say that I later discovered I had contracted a virus called 'slapped cheek' & further developed extremely painful hands & feet - so it wasn't the snowplough at all!!! Though WTFH & easiski gave advice that I have taken onboard.

Thanks for the advice but I thought the 'tray of drinks' is a technique not used nowadays?? My temporary return to snowplough has probably been really good for my carving, but I am sure it is not designed for adults!! easiski, will probably say otherwise.

the poles held horizontally in front of you drill is still used as far as i can see... I agree that ploughing can be taxing. perhaps you are edging a bit too hard and plough braking as opposed to extending upwards and rotating your feet into position for a plough glide. By extending the body upwards and rotating the feet into position this can be a bit easier on the body....

the second drill i mentioned works well for me with beginners on the dry slope

skimottaret, It's unbelievable how many different teaching methods there are isn't it? I think I do edge too hard (too busy looking behind to see what high speed 4 yr old is doing) & my plough is undoubtably cr@p, because I always lean back (& I automatically ski faster than my (plough) ability - because I am used to carving). Will try your method on sat, thanks for the advice. Smile

are you skiing on plastic? if so definately will be tougher if you are edging to much. You can always try to learn how to plough backwards and watching if not going to quick can be fun.....

skimottaret, hmmm, usually hurts when I try this! but you are right - would be a great exercise too! Do you do this?

if you go slow its not too difficult, try it on the bottom and see how you go....

rpft, Very glad to hear it's not a techniques thing. However I'm a bit concerned about the idea of flexing the knees and thus sitting in the plough - this is very old school and uncomfortable. Also you shouldn't have to edge hard. this was the problem with Mr Late Started who had only skied on plastic, and could n't turn at all - too much edge and the ski goes straight. I really advise tall, hips forward and spread your legs wide!! wink wink

easiski, i agree that the poles behind legs is not ideal but on really slow running plastic i am finding it difficult to get kids to flex in the plough position. They all want to stand straight up and go right to parallel to get some speed caus its fun. or they collaps there knees in to brake, any drills you can recommend?

easiski, thanks - can't tell you how relieved I was, just after the manically achy joints came the most horrendous fatigue - my imagination ran riot, then I noticed a rash on my face the same as my kids. apparently the virus mimics rheumatoid arthritis in adults - I really wasn't making a fuss! It's too bl@@dy warm in the uk, that's the problem, the bugs are alive & well.
