Poster: A snowHead
|
Have big withdrawal symptoms! Daughter got married this easter so we couldn't get our fill of spring skiing as usual- financial really. So question is, am I mad to contemplate a cheeky pre Christmas week (can't do Christmas or new year in 2008/9 due to more family commitments) I know that no one can predict snow fall with certainty, but I need to go.... We will be going at least twice more next season, so we would be going with the attitude of "if it can't be skiied, we will walk"- we just love mountains. Where would you recomend- we have skied Val Thorens, tignes, Val D'Isere, but do like Austria. Would Obertaurn be an option?

margaret, I'm thinking of going at the same time. Probably the best thing to do is wait and see where the snow is and book last minute, they won't sell out at that time of the year.

If you go somewhere that has a glacier, then you're going to be able to ski, even if there hasn't been a lot of snow. I've skied Kitzsteinhorn (Kaprun) a few times (although never in December) and that has always been ok.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I have skied in Zermatt in November, but the glacier is very flat, therefore boring. Are there any "good" glaciers to ski? Any skiing is good, I know that l am being picky. I am not an off piste skier, just a competent red/slow black skier. (please bear in mind, I have taken a long time to reach the standard that I am at, time is running out for me!!!)

Elizabeth B, What is Kitzsteinhorn like for near beginners?
Thanks

margaret, Hintertux has a couple of blacks and several reds.
And the chances are that most of the Zillertal will be open by then, most of the skiing is above 1800m.

Late starter,
Lots of long blues make Kitzsteinhorn good for near beginners and lower intermediates, good intermediates will be ok with a few reds but anyone beyond might get a bit bored in a week. Will definitely have snow, I've skied at the top in July.
margaret,
As above Kitzsteinhorn for snow certainty if its suits your abilities. Obertauern should be Ok and you could also consider Obergurgl/Hochgurgl
Here is a link, seems a good website with 3d graphics etc

Thanks robboj, had looked at map and seen blue but have discovered blue covers quite a range - looking for the greener versions of blue rather than the purple type!
