Hey hey everybody!
Well it looks as though there are plenty of seasoned ski gurus on here, so I thought I'd ask the question I know I will regret...
Is it too late to get some work for the ski season?
I'm a trained chef, experienced bar manager and generally well experienced in the hospitality trade.
But have I left it too late for this year?
I know there are drop-outs and homesickies later on in the season, but I don't want to hang around in the UK in temping jobs when the slopes are calling me!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Who knows, you may even get a free cocktail out of it if we end up in the same resort!
Many thanks!

See now that's where I've hit a bump in the road...
I come from ye olde worlde of the westcountry, and learnt how to chef by experience from the age of 15... no point in NVQs when you are cooking an a la carte menu before you get hairs on your chest! So it seems I appear at a disadvantage in the eyes of some TO's requirements, even though I've met NVQ chefs who can't boil an egg!
Would a decent cover letter or email cover it??

Did they tell you that, or is it just from reading the rquirements in their job descriptions? They might want celebrity chef, but they'll settle for burger flipper at this late stage. I'd ring them all rather than sending CVs/e-mails.

Fraggle, apply to some of them anyway. As you suggest yourself, the cover letter is a good place to bring this up. Also, if you've worked as a chef then include a reference so that they can have your quality/experience ratified.

Fraggle, worry not. My son has zero qualifications in cooking, but plenty of on-the-job experience and he's just got a job paying over 3000 euros a month. But he's got previous, and has worked through one of the agencies which places individuals. He started with a tour operator but parted company with them very early in the season (because they didn't get any time off in the first 10 days of training, even before a single visitor had arrived in the resort!) and free lanced. He struggled at first, but kept at it. The problem if you're not on a TO contract is finding accommodation and paying up front. But I agree with Lizzard, and the others, you should be able to find something if you get out there and sell yourself. Good luck.

Cooking steak in a ski resort is pretty much my perfect job I think.

Flims/Laax are still looking for lots of chefs - some up the mountain, but looks like one in the Signina hotel, the restaurant of which is meant to be pretty classy (I've not eaten there, but Cathy stayed there last year, you could PM her

You could always sneak in the back door. Try the bar route, then work your way to the kitchen. Best of luck. I'm sure you will find something.

Fraggle, here in Whistler, there is always jobs going for chefs/cooks/kitchen hands. I am 99% sure you could walk into town today and get a job somewhere. I'm not sure about how the qualifications things work, but you would get a start, and if you proved yourself, get the promotion/pay raise deserved.

I'd love to get out to Canada, but the visa trouble and air fares are putting me off...
I'm applying left right and centre for jobs now, and am rather enjoying playing around with new menu ideas again!

Apparently it's harder to get a bar job as they are relatively wasy to do (not true if you do your job properly, but...).
I'm definately up for pretty much anything now though... I'd make a lovely Chalet boy!
