Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Modern motorcycle helmets aren't heavy, but they do limit head movement and peripheral vision. They're also uncomfortably hot in summer, even the vented ones. Something like that for skiing would be unbearably uncomfortable. They just about work for motorcycling as you don't need to move your head about so much...

I don't have a ski helmet, but I do have a cycle helmet (that I only use for cycling on the road, I prefer to cycle without it). It can be hot and the chin strap is not comfortable, but the peripheral vision and movement issues are far less of a problem than they are for my motorcycle helmet...

I'd probably only ever consider a ski helmet if I were to ski off-piste (unlikely)...

There are some fairly sturdy knee braces which would surely aid in the prevention of knee injuries, and some wrist guards which could aid in the prevention of wrist injuries. I would suspect that this type of injury are much more common, so maybe we should all be wearing these too. Then of course body armour to protect the spine and hip area. Ooh, and a jockstrap and box to prevent ball-snag on the poma lift..... rolling eyes

Guvnor, many people, especially snowboarders do wear wrist guards! And body armour increasingly common, I wear a back protector, as do many of my friends particularly those who ski off piste a lot.

I think it's simple really.
Just make sure that people are informed of the risks and let them decide.
I started wearing a helmet after falling a reasonable distance down a steep piste.

guys you just gotta wear a helmet..even if you are just pottering around the greens is not the issue..all it takes is 1 madman (and there are plenty out there) with no wit to smack into you and that could be it..the modern ones are well ventilated and strong and look pretty cool with a snappy pair of gogs..30 40 50 quid to save your nut..its a no brainer! (pardon the pun) ps.check your insurance too,i'll bet theres something in the smallprint about wearing one... pps.it will be made law sooner rather than later which will push demand and therefore price up,so buy now and save a few bob too

I've just got one, it's light and not uncomfortable. It should be totally up to the individual but IMO why wouldn't you?

I have never seen a wintersports insurance policy which mentions helmets at all.

It is unlikely to be made a legal requirement for adults any time soon.

If that DID happen, it would undoubtedly result in a reduction in average prices, because increased demand only results in increased price if taht demand cannot be met.

I can't see it being made law any time soon either, cycle helmets aren't law so can't ski why ski helmets would be.

ok..made law is a bit strong..you will not be covered by your insurance if not wearing a helmet in the near future..thats a cert..alex henry, check your small print..when you go on a summer hol you arent covered to ride a jetski, windsurf etc unless it is writen in beforehand..also if you fall down the steps outside a bar and break your leg and are shown to be over the limit, you will not be covered medically by most companies..go on,check it out...also,a reduction in price would be a nice thought but when the insurance companies insist you have to wear one, wait and see what the ski shops do..we're not talking blueberries at sainsburys wink

snowpatrol, I always check the small print on my insurance policies. No wintersports policy I have so far seen has made any mention of helmets.

And there is nothing remotely "certain" about them changing soon, although it may start happening with some policies. There is no overwhelming evidence to suggest it makes a significant difference to risk, so most of them are unlikely to make it a requirement.

And it is a general economic fact that the more the market grows for a particular product, then the cheaper that product becomes (so long as demand does not outstrip supply).

My impression is that helmet prices have already fallen over the last few years, as wearing them has become much more commonplace (I reckon something like 70-80% of skiers/boarders were wewearing them last week in Austria).

Incidentally, I now wear a helmet, but that is my choice, and it should remain my choice.

beanie1, You may find that cycle helmets are required in some countries, for some age groups. If ski helmets ever are required by law, it will start with them being required for children, as I believe is already either actually the case or proposed legislation in some countries. But even thenm, it will not be international law, it will be something that only some countries will require, although it may spread.
