Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Out in LA for the latest trip I've ever done. Winter and summer holidays rolled into one. 29 degrees driving along the valley from Moutiers to BstM yesterday, still 21 when passing 1600 and a mere 15 at 1950. Similar today. Already getting a bit heavy mid-morning down to Pre St Esprit; mainly stuck to lapping Arcabulle and came in early afternoon. Supposedly temperature going to drop and some snow coming in. Will believe it when I see it!

I had a quick look at the livecams this morning to see how the recent hot weather affected the snow. The answer was a bit in 1800 but the pistes were complete. However, it is now snowing.

My plans for a last minute trip have been scuppered because I bought my skis home for servicing. It will cost more to transport my skis than me (£57 return for me, a small fortune for a bag, which alone will be £80 return, and a pair of skis) and the condtions still do not look good for the 155cm slalom skis I left in the cave.

It's been snowing gently since mid-morning Wednesday. Several centimetres of fresh powder, and decent, fluffy stuff, not heavy or slushy. Stuck to 2000 bowl today: visibility not great higher up, but good below around the level of the Bulle cafe. Particularly enjoyed Edelweiss and Cascades (still call it that) down to Pre St Esprit. Pistes not at all crowded. Anyone coming out for the final week will have great conditions on the slopes.

@195062, am told the village will be v. quiet next week - I think there's only ~ 30% occupancy pre-booked. Retailers a bit glum.

Enjoy the space this week!

Some of the restaurants on the 1800 side are already closed or closing this weekend, including Chalet Grillete, Arpette, Altiport, and Enfant Terrible.

We went for the last week of the season last year to Arc1600. Most of the restaurants were closed and even the one that was open (Labouche) had a limited menu where they were clearly running down their stocks. I cannot recall any bars being open. The shop also had very little stock. It's not suprising given that there was almost no customers around. But the skiing was great.

I see they have taken all the cabines of the Transarc and largely demolished the bottom station. It seems only yesterday they were building it.

But I'm glad to see it ebing replaced.

Au revoir Transarc! We noted that it was our final trip ever in it on our last day this year, and gave it a nod as we alighted. We went on the Vallandry lift for the first time this year. It'll be lovely to have an option like that in 1800.
Mr. O and 10 actually did a round trip on the Vallandry lift. We were halfway up and Mr. O realised he was holding odd poles. He'd managed to pick up one of his and one of someone else's. He and 10 looped back round to get his, and 12 and I raced them back down via the reds. The gondola won. Though I suspect that was me slowing us down. 12 would probably have beaten them. His pole was there but the mate of the odd one was gone. So he leaned it against the fence in case the owner came back for it.

John, we didn't manage to make the light show or the museum. But we're already planning our return trip next year and they're both on our lists.
We finally made the Igloo bar this year. Novel but not something we're likely to repeat due to the line taking 15 minutes to go down.
We also ate at L'Escale Gourmande in 1800 for the first time. This was inspired by one of @Macker's videoes where he had the flaming meat thing. We ate there on our last night and Mr.O and 10 got a shared one of duck and beef. They report that the duck was lovely but that the beef was incredible. Next year they plan to only have beef.

Overall, with us staying at Rob's, me meeting up with John and his wife, and us eating somewhere we found due to Macker, it was a very Snowheads inspired trip.

@albob, fascinating.

@Arctic Roll, sorry, I have no idea. They may be selling the whole caboodle somewhere else as urban transport across a city or even across an amusement park or river.

In the meantime I am trying to model a telepherique using Lego Mindstorms.

ps the conditions in Les Arcs still look good.

I saw on Facebook that they've all been sold to the same buyer. However, that's my only source, so I don't know how accurate it is.

Ahha! Saw that on our way to Morzine this year: didn't think of it as 'special', more "specialised".

But if I'd known they were the one and only, then I'd have taken more interest from the coach window! Fascinating stuff about the preservation of alpine history and the business model (albeit I'm less keen on what might be rather large transport costs of getting one to the UK, so think will admire from a distance).

@pmercer, Lift passes usually come on sale September/October time. In the past there have been discounts for early purchases but I cannot recall them being available last autumn. They do do occaisional flash sales for when sales are looking a bit slack, for examle this one last year https://www.lesarcs-peiseyvallandry.com/en/promo-happy-weeks. When we see these offers becoming available (Les Arcs usually sends out emails advertising them) we post them on Snowheads.

Flash deals came out last year in mid October, our group got ~£100 off each week pass for the first week in Feb (week before any of the French half term holidays). This is the first time I had seen such reductions anywhere in Europe. There were different amount off depending on the week (nothing for French holiday weeks) and limited numbers, we got ours about 4 or 5 days after first announced, they weren’t available a week later. I’ve know idea whether this will be repeated and if so will other resorts feel they need to do the same?

In relation to accommodation deals such as buy one get one/half free, often the price of accommodation increases to off set this, so you need to just look at the total price

Having used the Charmettoger lift a few times this year (the continuation to Vallandry was closed) a quiet lift that I actually quite like and prefer to getting the transarc to the midstation I wonder just what the plans were for its continuation when the new Transarc is finished. I've misplaced the presentation where the development of the transarc was published. Does anyone have the link. I think @Arctic Roll, posted it.

The Charmettoger is an important lift to getting into the resort as it is at the top of the Jardin Alpin where people who are coming from the Navette catch (from Plan Devin, the lower parts of 1800 and from top of the funicular)

@Layne, yes. I didn't ski the Aiguille Grive (I've skied down in the past) but skied a bit of off piste. It wasn't as good as it might look. About 10cm of fresh on a more or less frozen base but you could feel the old tracks, ice blocks etc beneath the snow. Avalanche risk was 2 but certainly it was sluffing in places, as you saw.

The pistes were excellent, on the other hand, perhaps not at the top of the Aiguille Rouge where side slippers had left bare ice on the steeper sections but elsewhere cold snow.

Hard to tell from pics whether it's enough to bury you or merely give you a scare.

I agree, from what I saw around resort were a lot of sluffs and I doubt you would have been buried but you could be taken a long way downslope or even over cliffs.

It is a bit uncomfortable. I can ski blues and reds fine, at least with yesterdays good snow.

I can't attack blacks down the fall line as I might have done before. Can't ski bumps at all, far too painful and not enough flexibility. I had trouble getting up the staircase to the lift at Peisey at the start of the day.

Powder ok assuming its perfect but would not attempt any of the pitches in that picture at the moment. This was my level

Easier than walking anyway. I was skiing slower but also better as I really don't want to fall. I did a small ski tour a few weeks ago and was sitting in the powder doing some adjustment and couldn't get back up! Ok yesterday my son was with me and he had instructions from mom not to go off on his own.
